Oke-doke, the main point of this thread: I''m trying to turn my computer into a "hardcore dev''ing" computer. All I have on it now is some games, Win 98, cygwin, and the intro version of MVC++. Basically, what I need to know is, what do the gurus have on their comp? In the context of tools, OSs, etc. NARF! ------------------------------ Trent (ShiningKnight) E-mail me OpenGL Game Programming Tutorials

Well, I probably don't qualify as either hardcore or a guru, but...

I have loads of games, but I hardly ever play 'em.
A large MP3 collection + Winamp is a must

Win2k Pro, of course.
Visual Studio 6 Pro.
J2SDK 1.3.
JCreator.
Editor '99.
Perl 5.6.1.
DJGPP
NASM
Numerous telnet/SSH clients.
Lots of PDF and HTML books (Art of Assembly Language, Thinking in C++, etc.)
Lots of other apps (OpenOffice, PSP, etc.) that aren't directly related to developemnt.

And most importantly, Litestep instead of Explorer

Edit: And Seti@Home, to put the otherwise wasted CPU cycles to good use .

I''m certainly not a hardcore developer, but I''ll tell you what I have anyways.

Right now I dual boot with Windows 98 and Windows 2000. I use Windows 2000 for anything but playing games; that''s what Windows 98 is for. I plan on installing a version of Linux soon, which I''ll use in place of Windows 2000 whenever possible.

I use MSVC++ 6 for programming with C and C++. I also have Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook installed. I never use Excel, I was just planning to learn how to use it. I use Word occasionally to spell and grammar check, but not very often. I''ll write papers for college with it. Outlook I''ve stopped using, and I''ve started using Eudora.

Well, I don''t consider myself hardcore, although I tend to develop whenever I get the chance...*shrug*

Anyway, on personal machine #1, I have Windows 98, NT, Linux, mostly using gcc and such for compiling linux wise, with Visual C++ windows wise. I do most of my editing through UltraEdit in Windows (one of the BEST windows editors in my opinion). I do not have too many mp3s right now, just over 1.3GB. I find The Matrix soundtrack to be great for developing, while something more soft (Bach, Mozart, or such) for deep learning...Not too many games (EQ, AO, Quake, Thief) although I hardly play them. MS Office 97, mostly just for word docs, but I use eudora for email. Not that many dev apps.

On personal machine #2, it is a pure linux machine (P75 Laptop =) ) so just the norm debian C/C++/Obj C dev tools.

On personal machine #3, just another win box for testing really, and multiplay games if I want.

On my work machine (NT 4.0), that is another matter altogether. Here is some of the apps on it: Visual C++, DJGPP, Visual J++, JRun, Visual SourceSafe, SQL Server 6.5 and 7, IIS, MS Transaction Server, ACCPAC 16bit and 32bit, Pervasive, Ultraedit, and numerous others (I work in interactive web development (JSPs, DB Connectivity, etc)). Visual C++ is mostly for my own personal use when I cannot take Java anymore, and I need to get low level

My START bar on all my windows boxes are a nightmare...someday I have to clean them up...

I only do coding so I did need anything else really. I have 3 other computers networked in my room alone and 3 more are located around the house. The ones in my room are used for testing the project. Game server, Web server, NPC client.

Quite a nice setup though when they''re all on the temp in my room goes up 20 degrees.

Well you gotta have WinAmp and at least 2 gigs of MP3''s.
Thats the absolute minimum. I couldn''t write one line of code without it.

From there you can add Visual Studio (my fav IDE) and other stuff.

dual boot:
win2kp for developing,
win98se for when i go to lans

since installing win2k sp2 i dont have to reboot to play games in 98 anymore, so i can get some decent uptimes.

vc++6

and like everyone else, winamp and my killer playlist of midis from the oldsk00l games :D, + some classical mp3''s, war music

I don''t think I''m very hardcore either, but I have:

Athlon 800/256MB
Voodoo 5 5500 (2x32MB)
SB Live!
40Gig harddisk, with seperate FAT16 partitions for (a) our current big project (~600MB) (b) all other projects (~700MB)
20+15Gig removable harddisks, mirrored, I make weekly backups on that
Zip Drive, make backups of the current work on there about every 600-1500 lines of code (i.e. every 1-3 coding days)

backups are a MUST.. I''ve lost far too much data with file system crashes and stuff like that

Software-wise I have:
Win2K for development:
Visual Studio 6 Pro Service Pack 5 (Visual C++, Visual Basic, Visual Interdev, MSDN)
DirectX 8 SDK, some of DirectX 7 SDK (only use it for DDraw anymore)
GIMP and Ulead PhotoImpact for image manipulation.
and as others have said: WinAmp (6 gigs of MP3s ) for inspiration, etc.

Win98 for gaming/testing

Linux for some development (gpp for CGI and other binaries, "KDE Advanced Editor" for HTML) and other jobs like the Internet (Opera, KMail, licq) or Word Processing (StarOffice)

That sort of wraps it up.

hmmmm now I am sad... all these people with lots of money to spend on expensive machines... All I have is a top of the line (as of when I got out of Grade 9) 200 MHz Pentium 1, with MMX hardware rendering, plus some no-name 3d GPU (Yes they are out there... I think it might have been ATI for its brand) with 4 Megs of Graphics handling, oh yes and 32 Megs of ram. Oh yeah and to state it RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW... I am no where near hardcore. I am just a little bit above being a complete Newbie (I am King of the Newbies...).

I am also sad to say that I would like to have atleast Win 95, but due to 1) Me not running scan-disk whenever it was shut down funny (I think it was because scan-disk was deleting important system files.) 2) My 13-year-old brother attempting to Undate Half-Life with an obsolete Seirra Updater (Which apparently had to be updated first) 3) My brother''s inane Idea that every single computer is exactly alike and if you can delete MSREVE32 in the task manager on one computer, it should be fine on every computer, 4) My brother''s inane Idea that you should just close what ever is not responing in Task Manage (even if it is an important system which will cause the computer to crash by ending that task), and not to possibly close some of that other garbage he has open, Win 95 is not with me anymore...

So now I am running a version of Red Hat (Why yes I am a Red HAt kiddie... try explaining Linux to your mother who just happens to be "Windows Expert," but lets not get into the whole Oxy-Moron debate) that is too advanced for my computer. Hmm it is pretty sad when Linux tells you that you need to upgrade.

But thanks to the godsend of SWAP disk, I now can run programs with only minor problems...

I haven''t really gotten a chance to fill my Harddrive with the goodies of the internet, so any suggestions... Nothing that requires sound though, my sound card doesn''t work, because whoever setup my computer made it so that the port that my sound card is on is always in use. Thus I can''t Sndconf it so that it recognise the sound card, because everytime I access the port, it gives me several error messages on how the device is currently in use. I got the exact same error in Win 9x, but the sound still worked.

So I would just like to state again I AM NOT HARDCORE... but this computer system might just be considered kind of old skool, if win 9x still worked...

Apparently I now live in Cyprus, thanks to the wonders of a bad browser...

Hmmmm... to judge myself on my coding experience would be quite foolish, so...

Web Server (Custom Built):
-Old School Intel Pentium 200MHz MMX CPU
-ASUS Mainboard
-64MB of EDO RAM
-20GB HD
-Creative Graphics Blaster
-Dualboot Mandrake Linux 8.0/WindowsME
-hosts website and Counter-Strike Server under Linux/Apache.

Coding/Gaming Machine (Custom Built):
-Intel PentiumIII Coppermine 800MHz CPU
-AOpen AX34 Mainboard
-256MB SDRAM
-45GB HD
-Diamond Viper v770 AGPx4 (NVidia TNT2 Ultra chipset)
-SoundBlaster Live! hooked upto a Pioneer amp/receiver (need music to silence the voices in my head)
-Windows ME (I must be one of the only people who know how to use this OS that is supposively buggy as hell, only crashes when my coding logic fails)
-VC++ 6.0 Intro Version (for fast/simple theory testing)
-MASM32 for the HARDCORE coding
-NASM for basic assembly coding
-???? for my Kernel/OS coding
-Art-of-Assembly PDF Documentation, Intel Programmer's Reference Guide(s) (also PDF Documentation)
-Relative understanding of "digital"-based electronics on the physical level (something every coder should look into sooner or later)

Test Machine (custom built):
-PIII 550 CPU
-128MB of SDRAM
-NVidia GeForce2
-SBLive!
-40GB HD
-Custom Kernel/OS (this computer is being used for inital testing of a custom Kernel/OS being designed soley by me.)
-Everything else on the computer is classified... for now

Beta Machine:
-Design of a complete new way logical data processing...
-side note... (don't design computer hardware unless you have a powerful amp with lots of music to supress the voices in your head!!!)

Basically, any computer will do for a coding machine as long as it is at least a Pentium/586 class (don't want to miss the market do you???) Any compiler/assembler will do as long as you understand what you are doing is (for the most part) purely logic based. Libraries for cross-platform execution are vital for anyone who doesn't take the time to hardcode things themselves. The introductory version of VC++ 6 is good for testing things, but don't waste 100+ dollars buying that junk... WIN32 "Assembly" is just as easy to code (if you can read your own code comments) as C/C++, and is pretty much the same code except for some exceptions. The only shortcoming (for now) is the lack of DirectX 8.0 support for WIN32/MASM32, but I have already seen many translations of the DirectX8 headers to MASM include files.

All in all, pick a coding language setup within your liking/money range, learn as much as you can and even more through trial and error, and if you are intersted in money from your programs... well... ask someone else about those details.

Useful Links:
-Windows32 Based Assembly Language (and more): http://board.win32asmcommunity.net/index.php
-Art-of-Assembly Homepage: http://webster.cs.ucr.edu/index.html

Useful Thoughts:
-1MB VGA card beats Voodoo hands down...
-Don't sleep with anyone crazier than yourself...
-All properly executed code ends up into definite logical processes, no more, no less...
-Windows XP is Big Brother...
-Learning basic digital electronics is fun for a programmer's imagination (if your really a programmer, not you "Software Engineers")...
-Kids are very dangerous people...
-Anything that can go wrong, will go Windows...
-Java is for drinking, no more, no less...
-Lastly... if you can't find a OS/Computer suited to your needs, make your own you lazy sob.

main thing, lots of memory - take advantage while it''s cheap.

other than that, w2k, and you may want to keep 98 for extra testing
