D3DERR_INVALID when calling CreateDevice (errors using debug version only)

I've been plugging through Frank Luna's Direct3d9 book for awhile, and noticed I've been coding with the Retail version of DirectX (set through the handy control panel utility). And now, on changing to the Debug Version, the call to IDirect3D9->CreateDevice fails with hresult 0x004cbf0c. Furthermore, the following dxerror info is printed: Direct3D9: (WARN) :****Direct3D DRIVER DISABLING ERROR****:First call to DdQueryDirectDrawObject failed! Direct3D9: (INFO) :======================= Hal HWVP device selected Direct3D9: (ERROR) :The specified adapter does not support a D3D9 hardware device Direct3D9: (ERROR) :Failed to initialize Framework Device. CreateDeviceEx Failed. Since the code is online at the authors site, I downloaded a fresh copy of some of the projects, compiled, and noticed the same error. I can include some of the code if needed, but straight from the source like this I'm near sure it isn't a code issue. And again, it works fine when "retail" version is selected. Could I have a faulty runtime or bad drivers?? Any other thoughts?? I'm using the March 2009 SDK with Windows 7 RC. If it comes down to it I guess I can develop using the retail version, but that can get a little more frustrating.

Is this NVidia hardware? I got the exact same problem (on an RTM version of Windows 7) with the latest drivers. I downloaded older (Vista-era) drivers and the problem went away. I believe the last version that worked was 179.48, but don't quote me on that :-)

I've reported the bug through their website, but I never heard anything back, and it's still happening even with the latest drivers.

Yes, its NVIDIA alright. I believe the drivers I'm using are 8.15.11.8581.

If its not too much trouble, could you verify the (working) drivers you are using? [Just as an aside, I'm finding mine through device manager->Display Adapters->Right click "properties", driver tab]. Just asking because I've had a fare shake of trouble with some other drivers and spent an evening or so getting it right :) .

Additionally, I found that when Debug is set, the device is -NEVER- created (not code, not video games, not pre-compiled Microsoft DirectX samples). So yeah, this def points to a larger issue.
