I saw Paranormal Activity last night, and I honestly have to say I was rather disappointed. I have been hearing radio and TV stations being bombarded with (supposedly non-planted) people saying it is the scariest movie they have ever seen. I don't see how. For those not familiar, PA is in the same vein as Blair Witch Project, in that it is completely filmed by camcorder. There is no Hollywooding at all to it, no background music, etc. I believe it was made for just $11,000, and for its budget, it is quite impressive. However, being impressive for its budget does not make it the most impressive movie of the year, or the scariest thing I have ever seen. In my opinion, Blair Witch Project did it much better. Paranormal Activity just keeps this somewhat slow pace for far too long into the movie, whereas BWP did come to a satisfyingly chaotic pace for the last quarter of the movie. With PA, you just keep wondering how long you have been watching it, and when it is going to pick up. I really couldn't recommend it considering the cost of movie tickets these days.
There you go. Another 'project'. Viral campaign, cheap movie, ker-ching. I didn;t like Blair Witch Project. It was ok, but not that scary. Maybe for students who like to sleep in woods...

Everything is better with Metal.

To their credit, Paranormal Activity was actually made in 2007 by non-industry folks. I am sure when they were making it they would have been thrilled to have gotten it direct-to-DVD in Blockbuster, but it caught hold at a few film festivals and got green-lighted for wide distribution. So I don't think that anyone made a cheap, crappy movie to try to steal the movie-goers money. I just think they did the best that they could to try to push a small, no-budget movie over the top. However, I do kind of blame the film publisher for choosing this for wide distribution.
There are very cheap

well I sleep in the woods often, but blair witch (+ similar eg [rec], also hyped as the scariest ever!!!! I find aint scary, lack of music perhaps?)
a good film for a similar budget is Tetsuo (not really a horror) but certainly is a must watch for all film fans, or try eveil dead1 (half the budget of blair witch but a lot better)

When I first read your sentence, I thought you've had a boring UFO encounter or something :)

LOL How jaded would someone have to be?
Well, you have to consider the audience who went to see Paranormal Activity. No offense, but there are people who watch horror movies, and people who watch Indie Movies, and the two seldom have a big overlap. The thing is, the people who claimed it was scary tend to be from the latter group. It was similar to about a week ago, and indie theatre around me showed the original Friday the 13th, and me, being a horror fan, decided to go see it. I figured most people there would have seen it, but apparently not, and there were lots of screams from the audience throughout the movie.

What the creators of it did was quite an accomplishment, but before you get your expectations up, make sure you know who the audience who was talking about it are.

That would've made for one helluva thread.

"Damn aliens didn't even break out the Rectal Probe(TM). Sigh."
I didnt think it looked too good, glad to hear I was right.
There are a couple of weekly shows on regular TV that look as good or better than this movie.
I knew it was going to be a crappy movie, because of the way it was advertised. They said its only coming to select theatres and they begged people to demand that it come to a theatre near them. Of course people are curious/stupid so people demanded it and went to see it. Now the movie is a success and they dont feel shame for putting out a shitty movie because theyre rich now...
People really will go see ANYTHING that you put on the big screen.
