Hey there. I've been programming simple and mediocre games for a while now, using the Allegro API and I'm pretty confident that I'm ready to move on, picking up some bit more advanced API's that stretches the leash a bit. I have a fairly good understanding of the basic/intermedate levelled C++ mechanics, but that's it and I'm not sure whether I should begin learning DirectX/OpenGL or if there is a step between those. Or is it simply a matter of preference? Thanks in advance. -Max

Yeah it's a matter of preference.

if not for the iphone OpenGL is somewhat dead as a game programming graphics API (only somewhat dead, theres still some life in it) :P

but yeah, it doesnt really matter what you learn but you should probably start learning one of the 2 as your next step into the modern age (:

Dead? The Wii, DS, PS3, and PSP all support and use OpenGL. How exactly is that the definition of dead?

Edit: To answer the OP, it depends on what your objective is. Are you wanting to diversify your API knowledge, or are you looking for things that will aid you in making "bigger and better games". If the latter is true then perhaps trying out some of the awesome open source engines out there, such as Ogre3D, and seeing what you can with them could be a next step.

Okay, thanks.
Good to know about OpenGL. I wasn't aware of that.
Guess it on to the mysteries of the third dimension, then. ;)

The DS and Wii don't use OpenGL

i've shipped games on those platforms and have 1st hand knowledge :P

they have their own 3d APIs which are "OpenGL Like" but as much as they are opengl like, they are also "DirectX Like".

Even if OpenGL saw absolutely zero use on any Microsoft platform, or on any game console, it would still be useful simply because it allows portability among all major operating systems and, in OpenGL ES form, some embedded platforms. I like Macs and iPhones.
