composition attempt

Being left with a game consisting of my own art and a friend's programming ability, I decided in my free time today to make *something*, basically anything, that would break the silence of the game. I have really not spent very much time composing music as my abilities lie elsewhere but here's what I came up with: http://filebin.ca/barhja/theme.ogg Any feed back is appreciated. I realize I'll probably be criticized but I felt like sharing this just to get some opinions. The programmer and a few other people I've showed it to like it but they may be biased towards me or trying to be nice.

It's a good start, you've got a nice theme that's memorable. I also like how you incorporated some stretto of the theme through various textures further on in the piece. You also incorporated some variation of the theme, as well as some episodal elements typically found in fugues.

Is the music supposed to be more up-tempo? What is it that you want this music to do? What is it that you want it to say? What sort of form is necessary to accurately express your idea? Is a form necessary at all?

Those are just some questions to ask yourself while you're working.

Keeping your experience in mind, I would suggest slowing your main theme down a bit, this will help ensure that it's more memorable to the listener.

Also, since your theme is syncopated, it would also be nice if there was something that illustrated the "down" beats or pulse of the tempo.

Your theme is rhythmically / harmonically active with short note values, adding contrast of long, sustained sounds with that would improve it.

If you work your phrases / sections of your piece in even measures, you're piece will be more symmetrical and pleasing to the hear. For example, adding / taking away something every 4 or 8 measures.
