Hello, I have been wondering, Why can''t you find supplies to BUILD a laptop? I have never seen a "generic" Laptop case, and or Laptop motherboard. . I mean you can buy the RAM, and the modems/ethernet cards. . . Anyway, I just think the prices of laptops are rediculas. Of course most of the price is because of the screen. So has anyone ever found a Laptop case/motherboard for sale? I rescently built a computer, and saved about . . $300-400, and figured, why not save that much on a laptop? Maybe we could get some company to start building them? Just an idea. . . _BUSTER_ www.crosswinds.net/~dotspot ______________________________ Check out my for sale domain name! http://www.theatermonkey.com

The most likely reason for manufacturers not agreeing on a standard for laptops/notebooks is that they can make more $$$ if you can''t build your own laptop.

Example:
My current system: 2x500MHz celeron, 256MB RAM, 50GB ATA100 (2 disks), 10/100 ethernet, Geforce 2mx400, 17" monitor
value: cirka $600-700

Fujitsu Lifebook: 1x500MHz celeron, 256MB RAM, 10GB HD, 10/100 ethernet, Trident Cyber9525DVD 2.5MB graphics, 10.4" tft monitor
price: $1700 (+taxes (in Sweden))

Notice how despite the notebook having 1/5 of the harddrive space, only one cpu, crappy graphics chipset and a tiny monitor, it costs $1000+ more than my current workstation.

True, but following that logic nobody would have sold PC cases, individual boards, etc because they can make more money from people buying complete systems.

It''s a good question, personally I''d also like to be able to just piece together a laptop like I do a pc.

It probably has to do with the fact that there''s a ton of room inside a PC case so anybody can maneuver and put stuff in. However space is very limited inside a laptop and probably takes special tools and maybe training to be able to put it together. I''m sure a lot of people would do the research/get the tools though if it meant being able to build cheaper laptops, I would.

But ordinary desktop machines started out as home-brew machines by enthusiasts before moving on to kits that the user assembled him/herself, and so forth. Laptops/Notebooks OTOH started out as pre-packaged solutions, and the manufacturers have kept them that way because it''s a lot more profitable.

(Yes, I know there were a lot of computer-in-keyboard computer back in the good-ol'' days (I still have my old SpectraVideo SVI-328 even), but that wasn''t how it started...)

Hey, if we can manage Windows, we can do anything! heh. I currently use an antec case, and I find them to be great because of their, compatibilities, and airyness (SP? or is it even a word?). I wouldn''t mind going back to the size of laptops like we used back in the early 90''s (like the case bing 4 inches thick), if it meant a lot cheaper price. Ok there''s my 1 1/2 cents. . .
