The really interesting info behind it is that it reveals the return of sales on Penguin books. :-)
If reprinting 7.000 copies costs $20.000, that's $2.85 per copy. The book sells for $20 in the shelf, which is about 7 times more expensive, or a 87.75% gross profit margin, respectively.
Fine, subtract a few percent for paying the author and such, but still... not bad at all (what do authors get, maybe 3-4%?).
I didn't think you could make *real* money with something as old as words printed on paper these days.

I was assuming those 20.000 were more or less inclusive distribution, since it said "to pulp and reprint".

Although they said they wouldn't withdraw the copies from the shelves as it was very hard, I assume that the "pulp" bit at least involves revoking the copies still at wholesale and, well... "pulp" them. Withdrawing from wholesale should probably be approximately as expensive as sending to wholesale (if not more expensive).

I'm not sure whether you actually get back money for used paper or whether you have to pay extra to get rid of it. High gloss photographic print is not b&w newspaper print, and I've been told these don't recycle well. So... not sure, really. They might actually have to pay for disposal.

You're right on retail, though. They'll surely want some too. Still, even then it isn't really bad.
