hello all. I have a problem. Up until today, I have been able to use Telnet and SSH (via putty, for a shell account I have) . But now when I try them they dont work. If I try to connect somewhere in telnet (sites that i regularly connect to) it immediatly gives me a ''could not connect...'' error. If I try to connect somewhere through putty in SSH I immediatly get a ''host not found'' error. Also, I read somewhere on my comp that there are ''0 sockets open'' so could that be a problem? I have no idea whats up. Any ideas? thanks a million! McDougal...DUCK McDougal

Okay, can you ping the host? If not, it''s their problem. If you get a ping then they may not be running their telnet/SSH server, email them about it because they might be too happy about being portscanned (it''s not illegal but it''s kind of out of the ordinary from the usual traffic so they take notice).

Where did you read that you didn''t have sockets open? If you''re using Windows File Sharing then you have to have at least one open (possibly two, I''m not sure since different versions use different ports, that is 137-139). In any case, it shouldn''t affect outgoing requests since neither telnet nor SSH require you to run servers.

Maybe your ISP is firewalling outgoing SSH requests. While that is exceedingly nasty to do, it might be possible. Try connecting to a different shell provider''s server (you don''t have to log in, just verify you can get there and see a login screen).

thanks for the info. Well, I pinged them (just theyre www....net site)...is this the right place to ping them? Also, I cant do a portscan cause of the ''0 sockets open'' thing, it will run, just wont return any results...for any site...i did a portscan on myself and it gives me ''no open ports''....like everything else. any other ideas? thanks

Screw it.

I still don't know where you saw "0 sockets open". Please tell me where you found that out.

Did you find another shell acount provider? Did you try what I said before?

You can portscan because you can post these useless responses. All that is required is being able to connect to a foreign host, like a web server.

If nothing works then your computer is freaking weird.
