I want to create a basic 2d engine that can handle a platform game that is a top view action game with awesome special powers! like duo princess:

And i really want to make my own engine. so is there any tutorials that i can read?

That looks more 3-d than 2-d to me.

Anyway, I'll go ahead and ask the usual questions, just to get you started:

1. How much programming experience do you have? What language(s) are you familiar with?

2. What platform(s) do you want to target?

3. Is there any particular reason you want to make a game engine, rather than just making a game?

then 3d it is!
I actually have next to none. do you could say im a noob and i want to target the pc platform.
the reason behind me wanting to make an engine is because i want to challange myself and that i want to be able to say that is is all my own because i feel good that way!

Well, to be honest, don't code just to say you can code.

You can't just learn to program by reading a few tutorials. It's not like origami or knitting that you can learn in a few months to a level when you can play cool and amaze your dudes.

It's years of hard, systematic work. And you have to be enthusiastic about it. Don't start it for money and fame! Learn skateboarding or yamakasi or whatever. You'll get more chicks.

But maybe I misunderstood you.

If you are serious about making a 2D Game check out SDL or SFML.

But first of all, do you know C/C++ or another language or are you truly a beginner ?

As for making an engine, if this is what you really want to do, start by listing the features you want to have. Start simple though... nothing to fancy as it will b difficult.

Write some code to load data from text files so you can load settings and other config data. Then try getting an image on the screen.

I hope some of this helps... but you will need some more details on what you are asking for help about. Just asking for general help on how to make a 2D engine is a little vague. Try breaking it down into smaller pieces.

Good luck

It is fun and interesting. But that doesn't make szecs any less correct about it being years of hard work. Tutorials, in my experience, teach you one thing: syntax. I have yet to come across a tutorial that teaches you how to actually be a programmer, how to think in the right way.

Now, with next to no programming experience I would suggest you don't make an engine. Mainly because, do you even know what features your engine will even need to have? No article or tutorial can tell you that either, because it all depends on the game and your own personal prefernces. Individual people may be able to if you have a specifc question, but honestly, if you can't answer the question your self then you shouldn't be making one.

To give you an actual follow up question to jyk's though. Which language would you like to use? (If your is answer C++ be sure to have read the two threads I believe which are currently going on about C++'s use in video games.)
