Hello,

are there any good tutorials about the topic "data-management"? I would need the following:

- Getting specific level-data (tiles, objects, enemys..) from text-documents. Currently, I'm only using hard-coded functions to create all my leves, which isn't my goal at all. I want to be able to write text-files which the game-engine scans for certain values, like a table of objects or tiles.. Thats what I think it should look like (of course its just pseudo-code):

Tileset: //FileName, X, Y
["Ground", 0, 800],["Rock",100, 750], ..

Is it possible to scan through the document to search for certain values, get the lines after that values, and pass that to the engine? I guess it is... but should I use an own languege or is it better to use a languege like Lua (I'm going to write my own level-editor)?

- Access comprimised/encrypted files like .zip, .bak, etc.. How do I acces such files? I would like to have the filename like using normal files (grafics, sounds), but when loading a file it should not search for the file but search it in the pre-defined files (like Tiles.zip) and load it from there.

- at least I would also need to know how to create/write into text files for my map-editor.

Any tutorials/help on this one? I don't have any Idea how to work with text-files, my tutorial-books somehow lack of this topic.. the same thing with the file-management, but I quess thats a more specific topic. Would appreaciate any help, thanks in advance!

Lookup serialization or XML data binding; both general ways to accomplish what you're trying to do.
