Hey guys i have a question and im not sure if this is the right place to ask so im sorry if it is not.

i have a game that uses directx 7 and i want to update it to have support for directx 9 or 10 because i have windows 7 and the game crashes frequently due to the lack of support for directx 7 drivers.i understand i have to rewrite the render engine and it could take forever by myself but i just want some direction and guidence.what do i need to do to learn to do this and make it possible?im serious guys,im willing to put in the effort so just please tell me what i need to do.thanks in advance!

Windows 7 (and Vista too) implement DirectX 7 by using DX9 driers. Therefore there is no need for DX7 drivers. The crashes you see may caused by misuse of DirectX that was tolerated by older DirectX implementations but they could although in a complete other area of the game.

As I don’t know our programming background I cannot tell you were to start exactly. But in general the first step for such a porting project is to get the source code in its current form compiled and running on our development system.

When it comes to the Version of DirectX you should target I recommend DirectX 9 instead of 10/11. There were some big breaks between 9 and 10 that make porting much harder.

yes, that makes sense and thank you for that knowledge.it gives me a better understanding.but to find out where to start as far as what to do with the source code i would have to post a thread like this in the programming department?which one?i dont wanna double post either but if its in the wrong forum i may never get the right information.
