My brother and me are huge fans of Magic the Gathering, but the problem is that he lives in Africa most of the time, so playing becomes difficult, so that's why I started on making my own software for the game in xna.

Progress is going smoothly, and it's almost playready, but now I encounter the task for making multiplayer, so my brother and I can play it against each other.

Now, I don't have any experience in multiplayer programming or setting up servers. So that's why I came here to ask, which would be the best way for setting up online multiplayer, and how (in c#).

Thank you in advance

First: Wizards of the Coast already run an online M:tG server. Although, given that boosters cost $4 just like in real life, I can see how you might not want to do all your playing there :-)

Second: Is this for Xbox or Windows? On Xbox, you can use the built-in Microsoft.Xna.Network classes, which have good tutorials on the creators.xna.com site.
On Windows, you can't use those classes (because your application is not a certified Games for Windows Live! title), so you will have to use some third-party library. The main C# game networking library I know about is Lidgren networking.

When it comes to hosting servers, if you want to host yourself, you have to enable port forwarding on your router, and you can run the game server on your own computer.

Finally: Wizards are quite aggressive about protecting their game. If you try to make this available to others than just you and your family, they may very well start sending you nasty letters and/or take other injunctive action.
