I would like to increase my workload in mathematics and physics in order to understand the concepts behind computation. I hope to one day contribute to efforts for new forms of computation, but I am a long ways away from looking like a competent research partner.
I ask the mathematicians and physicists with an interest in computing here: How has your knowledge helped you understand the problems of contemporary hardware, and what insights has it given you to the evolution of computing?
I wish I could be more specific, but I wouldn't even know how to start doing that in this respect.
