Well i do not know how to start... im from argentina and im trying to develop a new game. Im using as a base one open source code of a game which i have downloaded from my country.

i need to optimize the dirext x engine (dx8) so i could add lot of stuff without having any FPS problem. if someone could help me with this i would be really grateful.

to contact me, please send me a private message.

bye! thank you!

Your post is vague on what you actually want.

Do you know how to use a profiler already?

If you have one of the professional-levels of Visual Studio, pick "Analyze | Launch Performance Wizard" on the menu and it will add all the necessary profiling stuff to your code. Other non-free profilers are vtune and Purify.

For free profilers, Google shows several of them out there. I have no experience with the free profilers so I won't try to recommend any of them.

Basically you run your program under the profiler, look at what is taking the most time. Next takes a lot of brain power, you need to figure out how to reduce that time. Once you figured it out you change it and run it under the profiler again. Make sure the changed version really does take less time. If your changes gave the performance benefit you wanted you are done. Commit your change to version control, and find the next slow thing.

Sometimes the problems are fairly obvious (an unexpected 934123 calls to strlen when loading a level) and other times they are less obvious (a single call to UpdateAllParticles taking 47 milliseconds). Profiling and optimizing requires that you know what is going on, are able to pick it apart into the slow spots, and can replace the slow algorithms with faster equivalents.

Does that help, or are you looking for something else?
