For the past few weeks I've been switching genres on jango every couple days, and I've noticed that I am significantly more productive when I listen to classical music. It makes sense with any number of brain activity->music studies, but I am quite surprised by just how much more productive I am. I was expecting minor gains, but I find myself generally more relaxed while still being energized and focused.

I was just curious if anyone had similar experiences with other types of music.

This a million times! Classical music does the same with me also. I'm the kind of person that normally can't concentrate properly with anything on at all, but with classical music that changes. I think it might also work with trance which I'm trying now while doing coursework. If it doesn't work I'll be getting the classical back on.

yes, theres 2 modes with me
A/ general background music (normal as I always have music playing)
B/ wagner/mahler/strauss etc (hugely productive, apart from when Im singing along or conducting etc) because its empowering music. Even if I dont feel like programming at all, stick on some wagner + I can manage a couple more hours

Yae, but also Heavy Metal, or Techno makes me eerily productive too... or maybe it's just music in general... :/

Is there any way I can Like this without this throwing up on my Facebook account?

Pun, indeed, intended.

Various subgenres of trance (the ones without vocals) works best for me, such as this or this

my programming fuel comes in the form of jungle/ drum'n'bass podcasts... HOWEVER as soon as there are lyrics or vocals, productivity goes in the trash. my brain just can't handle words.

I don't normally post in the lounge, but this topic caught my eye.

I used to listen to a lot of rock/metal when doing gamedev work and also when doing exercise. I was introduced to a band called E Nomine (quite old) who's music is described as "monumental dance". It's a combination of classical and dance music. I've never found any music thats so motivating as this stuff.. and great if you like Rammstein as E Nomine are also German .

If the Song is good, I go into what I like to call "Programming Frenzy". I shake my Head to the beat and just type away. Works great for me every time I have Programmer's block

Could you guys post some good classical music I could wack into youtube? I never know what I should be looking for with classical music since it's not like modern singers singing a song with like 3 versions tops.

I have a theory. It might be the fact that lyrics tend to cause you to concentrate on them instead of programming (or whatever your doing), and just having music/beats allows you to background noise them and help you to stay focused, In one of my classes we learned that the more senses you involve the more you remember. Maybe this is similar in that when you program you only involve 2 senses which may cause your brain to get bored. However introduce some background noise and you add an extra stimuli to a third sense which involves more of your brain hence the increased productivity,

This is probably my favorite piece of all time, Beethovens 9th symphony, 2nd movement. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=yWaouJ6ufLE Crank that up and you'll be in heaven.

I like Vivaldi too, his 4 seasons piece is pretty good, here's a clip from the Summer section: EDIT, this is the 3rd movement of Summer: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=pe-MIDDfckw (someone mentioned techno music, I don't care much for it, but I have heard this song re-mixed into a techno song and it was pretty decent).

I also like Beethoven's 7th, 2nd movement, it's very dynamic, starting soft and getting louder: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=4uOxOgm5jQ4 (that video is interesting, never seen it before).

Try those and let us know what you think.
