Perhaps I'm entirely overlooking the intention of point sprites, but is there any way to use them for rectangular billboarding instead of spherical?
They're very handy for spherical billboarding so I'd love to be able to use them for further purposes.

Thanks.

They're a deprecated feature as of DX10 onwards (IIRC), so nowadays you're supposed to implement them yourself, which means you can make them function in ways that the old fixed implementation didn't support.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that. I'm using DirectX9 for the moment anyway.

I am not sure that is what you are looking for but : http://www.gamedev.n...-point-sprites/

So assuming you are running them as billboarded, if you use pixel shaders , it is possible , but again if it is what you are looking for

I was trying to avoid using any sort of pixel or geometry shader since point sprites were so simple. I guess there is no other route, DirectX9 or not. [/font]
