Team Name: Lightning Bolt Studios

Brief Description: We are creating a programming language and we need more programmers to help create it.

Target Aim: We are creating a programming language that is easy to use but also efficient.

Compensation: None

Talent Needed: Programmers

Team Structure: colts44(me) - programmer, team leader
Daniel Hostettler - programmer
German Gonzalez - programmer

Website: Lightning Bolt Studios

More Details:
We are creating a programming language that is a combination of HTML, PHP, Python, C++, and some new ideas. The reason is to make programming easier and make a language that can be used more efficiently. We are looking for programmers that would like to help us out. It will make you a better programmer too. We could also use people to help incorporate features of the languages listed above into our language so if you have a very good understanding of one of the languages it would be great if you could help us out.

This doesn't make a lot of sense....

You want to make a programming language that is HTML, PHP, Python, C++ combined?

Why? To make it easier? Once again that makes very little sense. Those programming languages are already slightly similar in terms of syntax and structure but are also significantly so different. C++ is already one of the most efficient and simple languages that you can use....

Another point is that simpler language syntax equates to less efficiency. You loose efficiency with simplicity because all high level programming languages translate to a low level language through different methods of compilation, Interpretation, and translation. Depending on the method and how much syntax needs to be translated into machine code or byte data, you could have a simple language like PHP or HTML thats easy to use but is extremely limited and inefficient.

Also, all of the languages you mentioned all use different methods of translation not to mention HTML really isn't considered a programming language.

It is incredibly difficult and takes tons of talented minds at work to create a new programming language, not to mention you need to know a low level language like assembly or binary which are extremely difficult to learn and utilize, which is why people translated these low level languages with high level languages that are much simpler to learn and use like C++........

You could make a "scripting" language that translates into a number of current languages with that language but its impossible for it to be more efficient than the one you made it with nor could it's features surpass it's parent language therefor doing so is pointless.

Just learn a mainstream language...

First of all we are using HTML to help create our language so it will be a combination of it in it. It is possible to make a language more efficient with simpler syntax I have been studying the parts of a programming language and we are going to make more features done in less code but get the same results that you would get in C++ or Java. Some languages are complex and hard to learn for beginners, we want to make a language that is easy for beginners to learn which would make other languages easier to learn.

We plan on doing all of these things in the programming language. Yes it will take many experienced programmers to do this. It is not "pointless" I have planned out this for a while and know it will be a good, easy to learn but efficient language. I know it is not easy to create a programming language but it is possible to create a great programming language and we are about to do that.

Languages aren't hard to learn. Learning a programming language is similar to learning a spoken language. The dialogue(Syntax) needs to follow the proper laws, logic and rules in order for someone(the machine) to understand it. Essentially all programming languages follow most of these same laws and logic because they're all speaking to the machine. The machine itself has interpreters to translate high programming languages to low programming languages to machine code and byte data and eventually interpenetrates to the hardware and memory .

Efficiency mostly depends on how much of your syntax needs to be interpreted by the machine and how many times does it need to be translated? For example...

HTML is NOT a programming language. You do NOT compile HTML and run it. Without an internet browser, HTML code is just a text document. My internet browser, which is currently mozilla firefox was programmed primarily in C++. When you surf to a local or web address to a file on a server with an HTML extension with script(not code, remember html is not a programming language) the code consist of tags that translate to the Browser and C++ which then translate to your operating system and then your opperating system translates it to the machine code and then the machine code translates it to your hardware...or in some similar tree format. Why is HMTL so very limited? Well its kind of obvious. Later on developers of PHP CSS Javascript etc did enhance on the very limited prospects of poorly efficient on the fly code interpreter that you call a browser...

My point is the more you simplify things the less efficient it will be and that means it will be limited in function. Sure you could program any function such as pixel movement and make another more complex language like C++ interpret it and say hey I made a new programming language...but it doesnt matter if someone goes to use what you've made and when they try to get pixel movement to work it locks up their computer from lack of memory because the code just wasn't efficient enough.

A very good example is when we simplify actual languages by using LOL for laugh out loud and OMG for oh my god but what if someone who simplified everything they said to you in abbreviations like "omg hwu? iiw yiw jse" How long would it take for you to translate that verses if I had just said it without abbreviating? "oh my god, how are you? if i were you, i would just speak english." If you're making a programming language it has to be easy for the machine language to understand and translate.

To make it really simple for you....

Make easy for machine to understand = Machine can do lots of cool things easily
Make easy for me to understand = Machine has to think more instead of doing really cool things.

Finally...I'm not trying to provide negative feedback, so don't be offended. I'm just very skeptical.

What base programming language are you going to use as an interpreter?
Also, you are going to need more than programmers to do this. I suggest widening your field of request to include Mathematicians and Logicians.

On another note, there are several other languages that have already accomplished what you are trying to do....for example, the first language I learned it is called Processing, look it up. Easy yet powerful.

I know HTML does not need to be compiled but I still am going to use it to help put together my language. I looked up the processing language and that is what I want to do but I want to do it in a different way that programming languages do like I know Python very well so I have been looking at the way different things are created and I want to do that in a different way, I know there are plenty things that I would prefer to do differently and I think it would be very fun to create a programming language. I have found many people who think it would be fun too.

We are not trying to do the things like other programming languages that would be pointless we are wanting to do things differently

Man, this is a great April Fools joke guys. Made me laugh out loud. Good work.

Sadly, I don't think this thread is a joke because I am familiar with colts44. =/

Umm... I don't see how you could think this is a joke, we are creating a programming language and need programmers.

Well I may as well ask.

What experience are you looking for? What people of skill are you looking for? Someone who knows assembly? Someone who can write C++ or can do cross platform programming?

What platforms are you aiming?

I know the hole goal is to make this language "easy", but what exactly are we doing here? Creating a language that does GUI easily, able to perform complex operations in a few lines of code, able to write a 3D application in a few lines or are you just simply trying to reinvent the wheel?

Cause to me it sounds like you are, I'm not trying to be a downer, but if your going to aim to make something as complex as a hole new language you may as well make it do something interesting then writing million lines of code to just to end up making it work like C++ all at the end, so it kinda seems pointless and there is already a language called LUA, which does C++ like syntax for loading script files.
Check out my open source code projects/libraries! My Homepage You may learn something.

Are you wiling to share any details on this proposed programming language.

Such as how you intend to make it easier to learn and retain the same level of flexibility?

For instance:

we are going to make more features done in less code but get the same results that you would get in C++ or Java

How do you specifically intend to accomplish this?

Will this language be compiled or interpreted?

What kind of syntax are you going to use? Can you post any examples(if you have any, or have even started working on the languages syntax)?

I have to ask a question: Why are you reinventing the wheel? There's twenty million (okay, I'm exaggerating) programming, scripting, and prototyping options out there already; why do you need to create another?

If you need performance, use C or C++ or even C#. If you need flexibility, use Python or JavaScript. If you need simplicity of use, use Lua. If you need something extremely easy to interface with, use Angel Code or Boost.Python (for Python) or again Lua. If you need something somewhere in the middle, Lua and JavaScript (with Google's V8 or Mozilla's SpiderMonkey as the engine) are good choices.

If it's just that a language binding for an already similar scripting language doesn't exist in the language you intend to use for your project, then just make a language binding for it. That would be much easier than creating a language from nothing besides abstract ideas.

However, if you have a legitimate reason, and agree to license it under a license that doesn't restrict linkage (IE, MPL or any non-copyleft F/OSS license), I might be willing to help for the experience of it. Otherwise I'd probably be wasting my time.

We are writing the compiler in assembly. We are looking for people with lots of experience. I plan on licensing it under MPL. This is not a bunch of abstract ideas. We are incorporating ideas from different languages that already exist and creating a general language from those ideas. We are wanting the language to be able to do more in less code. We are wanting to add many new ideas to the language to make it unique.

Judging from your website, you have many ideas and no focus.

P.S. I suggest you hire some C# programmers to create an IDE for your language. Piracy aside, if you can make a piece of software that people can use to write your new language, you can rake in some extra cash!!!1!

P.P.S. How old are you?

not even LLVM and GCC are written in assembler (they are written in C++ and C, respectively), and they're probably the most widely used open-source compilers right now. I can't guarantee this, but I'm fairly certain that the bulk of Microsoft's Visual C compiler and .NET runtime are written in C as well. You gain nothing from writing it in assembly and lose a lot. Writing it in assembly is a terrible idea

You also only have abstract ideas, or at least that's what you've shown. What will the actual syntax look like? Could you give an example of a piece of code that would compile and execute flawlessly? Will it support advanced features like classes, interfaces, templates, operator overloading, etc? Will it support high-level features like foreach, nested classes, nested functions, concurrency generics, etc? What will the standard library provide?

Those compilers were written by people who didn't know what the hell they were doing.

Which is why every OS besides Windows to see any frequency of use in the past decade has been using GCC for that same amount of time, and why large companies like Apple (who one would assume would know what they were doing given that they are the only competitor for Windows in the market) have people on their payroles working exclusively on LLVM.

But I'm sure that you, some random goon at gamedev.net (as opposed to compilerdev.net or something more relevant to the topic; not that it would mean much more), know much more than these people. Also more than every developer at IBM, Sun Microsystems, Google, Microsoft, and let's not forget nearly every university professor of computer science or computer engineering in the world.

(If you can't get what I was inferring above: If everyone that's an expert is doing something one way, and someone who is unlikely to be an expert says to go another way, who is most likely to be doing things correctly?)
