Avatar Issues

Okay, first off I don't know if regular members are still not supposed to have avatars, so I was debating not posting this issue for fear of removal of mine. I know I still have to use the roundabout way (which I will try to avoid disclosing in case the plebeans are still denied this 'feature'). Second off, sorry for the long story.

Recently, I made a couple of posts, all fine and stuff, but noticed my avatar was a little blurry. I'm a bit of a stickler for pixel-perfection, especially with regards to the great and powerful god of Tricks and Awesomeness, Coyote. The blurriness is almost always due to scaling of the image, so the first thing I did was check the image info: 100x100 scaled to 90x90.

Not only is it downscaling the original image for a thumbnail (the original is 115x115) but it's then being downscaled again by the browser. No problem, I'll try using my bigger version since it offers sligntly better downscaling. Nope, the forum sees my tactic and counters it by creating a 50x50 thumbnail, then using that to upscale to 90x90. Ew.

So, I know the final size should be 90x90. Fortunately, this avatar is one I use on a couple of other forums, each with their own restrictions on avatars, so I had made an SVG to render at any size I wanted. So I create a 90x90 version, pngcrush it for niceness, upload it, and try to set my nice, sharp avatar.

Now for the actual issue:
The first thing that was odd was that, using the cropping system in the roundabout way, the cropping area was larger than the image. I proceeded to try to shrink it to the image size, but couldn't, only moving it to be aligned to the bottom right corner instead of the top-left. Giving up after a few tries, I decided to go ahead and try applying it as-is, and hoping it wouldn't pad out my carefully sized image, only to shrink it to fit again.

Nothing happened. The image didn't change, and refreshing the page on a thread I had posted in didn't change it. It simply failed to stick. I tried again, same result. For some reason I tried adjusting the cropping for the current avatar, and that's when it decided to show up. However, it was oddly shifted up and left, and padded out with red, but not solid red and not a red that matches my avatar's border. I could not adjust the avatar cropping box either. This only happened with my 90x90 image. My 115x115 and 512x512 images can be cropped just fine.

I would assume that the cropping issue shows up with images smaller than 100x100, given that this was one of the sizes that the avatar is resized to and exactly double the size of the other one. I'm also somewhat confused as to why the system tried to use the smaller 50x50 thumbnail for my full sized avatar when I tried to use the larger image, but used the more reasonable 100x100 for the smaller avatar applied through the exact same means.

TL;DR:
There's an issue with cropping and assinging avatars of a certain dimension using the roundabout means of avatar uploading.

If a staff member wants the "classified" details (merely what the roundabout way is) in order to test themselves, or the lowly villagers are in fact allowed to have an avatar (in which case avatar uploading via URL is broken) I can provide the details through the appropriate means. I have no idea if, but doubt that, it could cause a security issue due to it's odd behavior when working with binary (image) data.

Now go to your profile and try to adjust the cropping there (hover over your avatar to get the button to change, then click the "Adjust Crop" button), and you'll probably get the wierdness.

Also, I find it amusing that my current adjusted avatar, which is smaller in dimensions, is a larger filesize than the one it was generated from (and with worse quality), despite being the same file type (albeit by a dozen bytes or so, but still).

I can't even get rid of my face.
no matter what I do, my avatar stays the same. It's a pretty annoying thing

This is a caching bug with maxcdn most likely. It looks different when you upload a new one right (and then switches back)?

Nope, it doesn't change at all. It looks like it just completely fails until you upload/cropfail, then edit the current avatar's cropping where it finally changes the picture but is not quite right. Maybe in a little bit I can post pictures of how it's failing for me.

Now for some reason the "My Profile" avatar cropping is broken for all of the pictures, and the stupid system refuses to stop resizing the pictures to 50x50. I just want a nice, sharp picture, not something that has been resized twice!

Our CDN is caching your pic for 24 hours, so you don't see the changes immediately. I still don't have the fix in place for it.. should be very soon though.

If I change the picture, I can see the changes immediately, even if I go to a thread I've posted in and hit refresh. There are differences between scaling 115x115->50x50->90x90 and 512x512->50x50->90x90, so I can see that something's happening. I just wish it would stop choosing 50x50 as the intermediate step and at least go back to 100x100, if not leave the damn picture alone below a certain image or file size (for the post image. I'm okay with the 50x50 avatar in the thread list and reply box since those are supposed to be 50x50).

The caching issue is fixed now, but the scaling issue seems built into the software. The photos are supposed to be profile photos rather than avatars, though I think many people are using them as avatars.. the scaling doesn't seem to be good for line art graphics.

I wouldn't be so upset with the scaling if it were at least consistant. szecs' picture is 200x200 scaled to 90x90. Mine is, ATM, 90x90 scaled to 50x50, scaled back to 90x90. That's just inanity. And the cropping problem that I made the thread for is still broken. My current avatar shows what happened when I tried to set my 90x90 picture.

I don't know why this bugs me so much.
