I want to get into game programming but I feel it''s too late. I''m 18 years old. What do you think? What should I do.

If you''ve got the enthusiasm its never too late. Especially at 18 for goodness sake.

Take small steps. Have projects that you see through to completion. Not necessarily all games but maybe a project that does a subsection that you want to learn about: allow you to construct a simple 3D world with an editor and move around it.

Hey,

I only started game programming about a year ago and at that time I was already 21. But I got enthusiasm and I still have it. Of course, I already new "regular" programming by then. And now, one year further I still enjoy the making of games.

I didn''t start programming till I was 19. I''m 23 now and putting the finishing touches on a PS2 game. EA Cricket 2002, due out in November. So 19 was definitely not too late.

Also, notice how most people who started out at 8 still don''t even know how to make games? (10 years later) They didn''t understand enough to learn fast enough, they had to teach themselves the logic of the world while they taught computer programming. You just need to read some books and maybe take some classes, and in maybe 3 years youll be making some of the best games around.

Good Luck.

Learn C++, by the way, its the best game programming language around. I suggest ( as I always do )

Age aint nuthin but a number, brother. =)

Honestly, dont worry about how old you are. If your interested in programming you should persue it. At the very least you''ll find out if its right for you are not. Just do me a favor and start small. I think a lot of people get discouraged because they decide to start making games and then they decide to make a game thats "like quake" or "A MMORPG". Those are great choices for a game to make if you have a full team, production budget, and years of experiance. Put some sprites on the screen and make them move around, hehe, if you still want to program games after that welcome to the family. =P

I don't know if it's better than the C book but C++ is used a lot more than straight up C, especially in books / tutorials on game programming.

oh btw, it's never too late!

Age isn''t an issue if it''s something you really want to do. I''m only 20 now and I started programming at school at about 17 - 18. That was pretty much just Basic and VB. I started Visual C++ at the start of this year, taught myself with Sams C++ in 24 hours book. In July I picked up Ian Parberry''s book on game programming. Since then I''ve pretty much finished my first game. It''s nothing special but your first game probably shouldn''t be. As it''s been mentioned above, you shouldn''t set your sights too high as no-one is going to write the next Quake, Diablo etc for their first game. Just start off small and work your way up from there...worked for me anyway
Hope this helps your decision.

Don't worry man, if you think 18 is to late you must be thinking of something else. most programmers don't start till up to 21. I first learned programming at 15 but not games. Most people can't haddle graphics until about 17 till 21. You should go to www.makegames.com for advise into how to become a computer games maker from programming to design.

I am 23 and I really didn''t start programming in general until I started college. I have a Bacehlors Degree in Computer Science, and pretty much program for a living. I have only been programming games (hobbyist) for about a year. It doesn''t matter how old you are. Some of the people that lurk on these boards are still in high school, and that boggles my mind! When I was in high school it was more fun to play the games then make them. Take your time, learn as much as you can, and most of all HAVE FUN!

I started programming at 13, I''m 15 now. Although I am limited, I feel that no age is too early or late to learn. I have too many problems and get discouraged(royally pissed), and find myself denouncing programming in entirety. Although I always slump back to it in hopes of more, which I always do get better / fix my simple errors |:^)

I wrote my first game when I was five.

The story sucked but it was an ok game compared to some other C=64 games I had.

That was 15 years ago.

The point?

If a five year old can make video games, so can you.

Hmmm... I started two years ago, when I was 15... That is, do you think programming graphical calculators count? :D Turth is, these things are quite a good start I think... Slow as hell, requires you to think in a different way

Anyway, "learn C++ in 21 days" isa very usefull book if you ask me...
