(Please note that I'm not accusing anyone specifically here, I'm simply spilling my guts about what I've gotten a feeling of on these forums. The reasons for these feelings are completely open for debate, however, and I'd like to simply hear some honest, open feedback.)
I have to be honest, I've come to these forums and immediately I thought it was a great place for lots of crucial information. So I started participating in the forums and sharing my thoughts in the post.
Now, I'm not going to say who's bad at this or that (and yes I'd include myself in that assessment), cause I'm ready to listen to criticism if people got something concrete to point out. But if people are going to criticize eachothers replies (beyond replying to the OP), then at least criticize their logic and not the literology of their sentences or similar things that are completely irrelevant to the actual issue.
Also, please refrain from attacking the person behind the argument (and yes causing other forumers to question my integrity where no question is due, isn't any less of a personal attack. It's actually what's commonly referred to as divide-and-conquer tactics). Attack the argument, if anything.
I came to gamedev.net to get away from all the childish "he said, she said" attitude and maybe find some serious information about things, and maybe share what I know myself. But then I got this feeling that it was more important to know who people were rather than what they knew. Empirical fact isn't any less true just because a newbie utters it. Just have that in mind, is all I'm asking.
Woah-woah-woah, let's step back a bit:
Don't get me wrong, people. I'm not that fragile about things, I can take a good beating. But here's what I feel, at the core:
I feel like a good forum is a place where everyone's thoughts are heard, and where people actually dare to speak their honest minds without the fear of reprisals that does nothing for the thread and focus on the content of the post rather than the character of the poster. But if the content is actually incoherent, then there's room for addressing that too (I don't like it, but I don't mind that people question my logic, especially considering my lack of background).
Secondly, when a forum has clear rules about how to act or not, I think it's important that nobody gets special privileges, just because they're on good terms with the moderators. That is the great road to elitism that can scare off newcomers. The question I am left with, is how important the moderators feel this is and how diligent they are at enforcing it.
Thirdly, if people wanna talk personally with me, whether it's just a query, constructive criticism or blatant complaining, then I got zero problem with that. I take all information as information, because that's what it is. But please send me a private message and let's keep it outside of the threads (suggestion to forum guidelines).
Bottom line:
So, I'm not sure if I'm the one rambling (probably lol) or if there's actually something going on here. Please don't assume that I've concluded either. I'm just opening the channel, and then you can discuss the validity of this. Who knows, maybe it's just my non-english heritage that causes me to read the wrong things into the threads, which obviously leaves you with a bit of a contradiction - how can I complain about that if, I'm just as bad myself. The answer is that these suggestions go to all of us, including myself introspectively. (We can all be better.)
As for me, I'm ever trying to look for ways to improve my own language and do my part in being concrete, to the point and not start flaming, trolling, troll-feeding or anything. All I want is to learn tons of game development so that I can do some kick ass work and make some great games for people.
Obviously, that work includes a social aspect as well. So again, don't take this as an attack on the forum, take it as a possible issue to look further into. If it's nonsensical to you, then that's what it is.
Anyways, keep up the great feedback people, I like this forum a lot.
Sincerely,
Ronnie
