Look into REALbasic. I hear it's quite similar to VB.

EDIT: Also check out this page for information on converting VB applications to REALbasic.

I don''t know if there is an easy way, as BASIC is not at all standardised and VB is very Windows-centric. I''ve not used ReaBasic so can''t comment on that.

When I''ve been writing code to run on Mac and Windows I''ve worked in C, which is the most standardised language across PC platforms. I then used OpenGL and GLUT as a cross platform graphics and user interface library. C and OpenGL are a quite viable combination as they''ve been used to develop cross platform games such as Quake III.

OpenGL is now the preferred graphics API as well - I guess Apple wants to make it easier for Carmack''s games to run

Thanks for the replies, Seems like C qould be the way to port it. But since I''ve already done the development in VB I did some research into REAL basic and found that there is a way to directly port from VB into REALbasic.. The only stipulation I''ve discovered is that it requires Mac''s OS X to be installed on the clients machine to run. I guess my question is this, "Is Mac''s OS X a very common OS for Mac''s? I mean what type of user base does this have in the Mac community?"

No, it''s not common. Most Mac hardware out there can''t even run X at an acceptable speed. At my University, I would estimate that about 98% of the Mac users are still running OS 9 or lower.

Is this true? I believe there are separate versions of the REALbasic development environment for OS 9 and under and OS X 10.1 and above (REALbasic 3.5 and 3.5.1 or 3.6 respectively). I probably didn''t do as much research as you did, but I''m almost sure that REALbasic supports non-OS X platforms.

All Mac hardware since about January ''99 should be able to handle it. It''s a similar problem that developers have when deciding how far back to support - apparently the majority of people buying new software have new machines. Whether this means that people with older systems don''t buy software because they don''t want it or because they can''t use it is unclear

As for OS X itself - it was only released (or escaped) about 6 months ago, most people using it are the early adopters, the hard-core bleeding edge people. The other group of people who have it are new mac buyers but they have dual boot and probably would still prefer to run OS 9.

OS X smells rather like a release candidate that was put out in time for the adverftised release date, with OS X 10.1 being the real OS X (and even then it has it''s problems so I hear).

Getting back to your problem at hand, I can''t see any reason why RealBASIC would require OS X. It may be the case that the latest release requires Carbon, which would mean either OS X, or OS 9 with CarbonLib. That''s not a problem, anyone can download CarbonLib for free.
