Performance question

I seem to be getting poorer performance than I would expect when rendering multiple characters. I''ve got 20 instances of the model FSoldier, which is 1500 polys each (3000 triangles). In addition, I''ve got a small terrain under them. If I face the camera so most of them are displayed, I get 4 FPS. If I turn away so none are visible, but half a screen of terrain is, I get 16 FPS. If I remove all but one of the FSoldier models, I get 25 FPS when looking at it, and 40 when looking away. I have tested this on two different systems, both P3-900''s. One is my laptop, which I expect poorer performance from, but the other is my desktop with a TNT2. I am doing nothing fancy in this app. No emitters, no reflections, no shadows. I am using RC1, and the app is based off SimpleLand from beta-6 or so. Why is it so slow? What can I do to improve performance? I pray this isn''t the best PR can do. Dave

1. laptops have crap graphics. i''m supprised you got it to run at all.

2. TNT2 doesn''t have hardware T&L.

Although there is no set rule, I''d say you''ve simply got to many triangles for the system. I think between 10-15k triangles is what you want for a TNT2 based system. (I don''t own one, so don''t quote me =) Try taking away your terrain, and rendering a couple soldiers. It could be your code, but IMO it''s just too much for your system.

Do you really think it's a hardware problem on my end? If so, what would be the minimum graphics card available today needed to get decent performance? Is PR going to be a GeForce-only engine?

Chris, will a GeForce2Go (the one built into some new laptops) provide good performance and features?
