I was just wondering, has anyone heard whether ot not DirectDraw will be returning in DirectX 9? I seem to remember reading a post after DirectX 8 was released from someone at Microsoft saying DirectDraw would be probably be back in DirectX 9, though it would probably be very different from DirectDraw 7. Yesterday I saw something on MSDN saying that WinXP would offer a GDI+ which sounded like it would do pretty much what DirectDraw used to do. I know you can do everything in Direct3D that you used to be able to do in DirectDraw, but I'm still finding myself missing the old ways of doing things. Direct3D is a lot easier to use in many ways than DirectDraw, and maybe I'm just being nostalgic or just was too used to DirectDraw, but I'd like to see DirectDraw return. Does anyone know any more about if GDI+ will offer the performance of DirectDraw or if DirectDraw is going to come back in DirectX 9? Just curious. Edited by - JimboC on October 13, 2001 8:26:27 AM

In this month''s MSDN mag they talk some about the new features in XP. They have a brief part about GDI+.

Basically unlike the old GDI which is organized into functions, GDI+ is organized into classes. It is supposed to be much more functional than GDI and has a few new features like a LinearGradientBrush and a Font object.

Not quite as sophisticated as DDraw from what I read.

I am really new with Direct X. Could anyone explain to me what I need to do in order to get Direct Draw to work and be able to draw a sprite to an off screen buffer. How do I make a surface, and how do I write a sprite to that surface. Help me please!

I know that Blt and BltFast are making a comeback in DX9.

DirectDraw is still included in DirectX 8 and will be in all future versions. Because of the COM-architecture, new stuff can be added to DirectX but nothing can be removed from it. This ensures backward compatibility. DirectDraw can be accessed with the DirectDraw7 object. So DirectDraw will still be included in DirectX 20!
