Did I just ask the forbidden question?
Sorry for the outlandish post fella''s. I''m posting this message via the library, okay so I''ll sell my belongings to get my CPU back on-line...Anyone know of any deals on hardware, besides joe''s hardware? I guess we haven''t evolved to open hardware yet?
I guess I have to do it first, then we all were doing it all the time, right? I''m new to this computer stuff, so forgive my lack of helpfulness on the topic.
Does anyone know of any place that people who have old computer hardware may possibly send it, or does all that stuff get burned like ''old'' books or something?

You can go to pricewatch.com to see who''s got the lowest prices on components.

There are open hardware specifications. If you want to get a soldiering iron and buy parts from radio shack, there are various boards you might be able to make yourself. But CPU''s and video cards don''t exactly lend themselves to hand assembly.

Usually old computers go to one of two places: A non-profit organization (or school) as a taxable donation, or a computer reclamation business that will break out the components that still work, take the gold connectors off the broken boards to be re-used, etc, etc. Neither one of these places will give you one free, though a reclamation place might sell you a working (but old) system cheaply.
Burning computers is illegal, and would be a terrible health hazard.
Is your old computer definately ruined? What was the extent of the damage done?
If it was not plugged in (not just turned off, but properly unplugged), then some of the cards and other components may still be salvageble after complete drying. The enclosed parts (power supply, monitor, drives) would likely be too dangerous to attempt to use again, but a local computer shop might be able to give the system a proper drying out for a fee.
Note that this can be _very_ dangerous, and I don't take any responsibility if anyone hurts themselves or sets fire to their property from this idea. If you have the slightest doubt as to safety then don't try it.
That said, I accidently poured about a litre of water into my (turned on) monitor once. After a week upside down drying, it still works four years later...

No flood insurance on the homeowners policy? and yet you live in a flood prone area? I feel for ya man, I''m running a POS celeron 366 overclocked to 412 mhz and its slow but I can''t afford to upgrade either. It used to run @ 550 too but not anymore.
Well, it''s alway on, so ''ruin'' may not properly communicate this message. However, I''ve found all suggestions helpful. It will simply take more time than my comfortable id desires. i''m currently starting fresh from scatch, in about 2 weeks I should be up and running.
Back to CheezeGrater''s reply, do U know where I can get specs on open hardware besides www.openhardware.org ?
Be excellent to each other?
