Hello, I am the editor of a new game programming E-Letter (MakeVideoGames.com). Some of you already know me from a previous thread ("Ultimate Game Programming Newsletter?") I'm creating a this thread since the other has gotten a bit out dated. Our newsletter is still brand new and we want your feedback so that we can continue to improve. We are now giving you the option to receive the first newsletter after you have signed up. Check out the site: MakeVideoGames.com If you are already a subscriber, post your feedback on this thread. Thank you! Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated! --Lowell N. Manners lowell@makevideogames.com MakeVideoGames.com Edited by - Lowell Manners on October 25, 2001 7:08:12 PM

I thought it was good - I read it early in the morning but I remember thinking it was good
I'd recommend others to sign up.

Actually I just checked my inbox to see if it was still there, but I seem to have deleted it! (second time I''ve done that already today!).

Well why not have a beginner''s corner, you could include a bit of basic source code and telling people what each bit does (you know how poorly commented some code is). DirectX seems to be stumping a lot of people.

What about a "specific" Q+A bit, for example you may have a question like "I want to add a homing missile to my character''s arsenal - what would the code be?". Now you''d only give the code for the missile, so it wouldn''t be dependent on the person''s own code (so it could be used by other people).
There are loads of Qs on the forum, and answers! If you like, make up the Qs to fit answers that you know! (don''t worry, the top magazines do this so it''s perfectly acceptable).

issue #3 was good - the "what makes a good demo" bit and the link was spot on, thanks!

Sad to see there''s not been much feedback yet, but I''m sure it will pick up soon.
When are you going to send me my $20? (joke!)

Very good newsletter.

Thanks tom, although we haven''t had a lot of feedback posted on the forums, we have had a lot of sign ups. We have 200 subscribers!

Next week I''ll put the leave feedback link at the beginning as well as the end.

So far all response has been positive, but we''re all for negative feedback and critizism! How else can we improve?

Hey call me Daniel

Here''s an idea - I just started a post about approaching games companies to get a job, maybe a little on that in the newsletter would be good (although your recruiter friend may not like that much, ppl doing it off their own backs).

I''ve had bad experiences with recruiters in the UK and now when they email me I tell them my bad experiences and make sure they know about it! (despite already telling them once, not all the staff seem to know lol).

You could try looking at the Direct X SDK and having those sorts of examples, something basic for beginners. Or a DirectX - what does this do? And talk about D3DLighting (or whatever).

But do keep the newsletter brief - have one from another site and it has so much irrelevant information like this

*Looking after your server with SQL
http://dumdum.com
*C# the future with microsoft
http://www.hophip.com
*E-Zee class that makes C++ Dlls for VC++
http://uglynastyindexpage.com
*Implementing a class in java with C and C++ and using Borland
http://www.stayawayfrommeevilaliens.co.uk

See how ugly that is? And there will be a list of 20, then REPEATED further down. Nasty indeed.

Have I complained? No, too lazy. lol

Well so far I don''t think we''ve done anything like that newsletter from that other site. But if we do, let us know. I just sent out our fourth issue. It''s nice to see our subscriber base growing at such an amazing rate!

If you''re interested in signing up, check out: MakeVideoGames.com

Thanks for giving us so many comments Daniel! They''ve definetly effected our newsletter in a positive way.

Lord Electro, you''re the only one we know of who has had that problem (we''ve tested it on 4 different email programs) but try turning word wrap off or on, see if that helps.

Hi! Just signed up for subscription. I think you
should have a disclaimer on the sign up page, though.
I mean, you won''t sell our email addresses to evil
spammers will you ? I sure hope not

Although it''s true that we will NEVER EVER give or sell your e-mail address to ANYONE. We don''t post it on the sign up page because believe it or not, when there''s a disclaimer, it gets people thinking about it and can even scare them out of signing up!

But yes, your e-mail address is completely safe. Our mailing list is all we have, the last thing we''d do is jeopardize it by making it available to others!
