I once had a couple ''joke'' programs that were designed to annoy anyone who uses the computer on which they''re installed- the first was one that automatically opened the CD tray every minute or so and the person had to keep closing it (even more funny if they''re using a CD rom at the time), and the other one inverted the screen every so often or when the hit a certain key (i cant remember). Anyway, does anyone know of a place where I can get those programs again, and possibly more of them just like it?

I had the screen inverter...But all I can remember is the filename was called "badday.exe" or "bad day.exe"

And, on a completely unrelated note, let''s see how long it takes for that ass Deceiver of Many to feel special by screwing up this thread as well.

I once wrote a small program that hid the taskbar and all desktop icons the funniest part was that if you closed the program you couldn''t un-hide it.

It didn''t have a name, it was just a blank window with a button on it. When you hit the button it would toggle the visibility of the taskbar and the desktop.
I left it on a computer at a place i used to work, I later found out that the database programmer that replaced me found it and ran it. The girl working on that computer tld him I wrote it and what it did and that he had to hit the button to bring everything back. He though he was hot sh*t so he closed the program and tried to bring everything back on his own. Eventually he had to reboot. I laugh every time I think of that.

Not so funny for the people who ran it, I made a small program that would immediately shut down and restart Windows. When ran, it would place itself in the Windows StartUp folder...

I''ll never forget that one.

Heh... back in the days of DOS, I did something like that... and it was funny, it wasn''t even a *real* program. Well, technically, I wrote a batch file, and then one of my friends renamed it from .bat to .exe... and the fun began. As soon as he realized that it rebooted the computer every time, he altered autoexec.bat to run it, but I remember he put in some kind of statement to give the two of us just enough time to CTRL+C to break the execution of the batch file.

*sigh* Dos.

I had a few of those. One of my favorites was CrazyDos, that had smart-aleck replies for every command you could think of and looked just like a DOS prompt. When you tried to change drives it would spin the drive up, then inform you that the drive was infested by aliens. It would keep spinning it making zapping noises for a little while, then say that eradication failed, contact NASA for further instruction.

A few of my personal ones on my high school''s AppleIIe''s would randomly start throwing colors all over the screen, one would count down to formatting a disk you put in (no, it wouldn''t really reformat), and a few that said you were about to do something horrid and to press any key to continue.

Think yourself lucky. I had just enough time to click "Start" and the menu to popup before I went off again. Needless to say, this wasn''t enough. I didn''t know how to stop it, until in the end an error occurred in it for some reason and it was closed.

God bless Windows.

Ah, I don''t need programs to annoy people at school... We got this very neat systems, with every student being able to login using their ID number, and a password. Let''s say I''m managing 16 additional accounts now

If you have root permissions and want to piss off a linux user, just set it to boot into runlevel 6. In otherwords, saet the default boot action to reboot. If you do that to me ill just cross compile win32 code under linux and set your CRT dispay on fire( Yes, it is possible).

When I was in middle school we had a image file conversion program on some of the machines that would take an image and generate an EXE file that disabled the mouse cursor and displayed the image in full-screen mode. A friend of mine made a replica of the Windows blue screen of death in paint, converted it to an EXE, and placed it in the startup directory of a bunch of computers. I''m sure you can all imagine the chaos that ensued.
The best part was you had to hit some arcane combination of keys like CTRL+ALT+F10 to close the program. They had to call the school district''s computer service guys to figure it out.

I saw an asm TSR program called drip. While it was running on the DOS text screen, characters would occasionally fall at random from their positions and drip down to the bottom of the screen.
And about fiddling with school computers- my brother moved all the desktop icons around, got a PrintScreen, make it the desktop picture, repeated. Three of every icon on the desktop, only one that worked. Apparently they changed the monitor.

I must admit that I once devised quite a malicious little bugger of an app. I was reading through one of LaMothes Win32 game programming books (I think it was TOTWGPG and not the Dummies one) and when he was describing how an app shuts down, it sends the WM_CLOSE message, but if you don''t post a WM_QUIT message in the handler, the app actually stays running

So I made an app that doesn''t exit no matter what (you have to use ctrl+alt+del to kill it) So I spruced it up with a string table that delivered taunting messages to the person trying to close the app by conventional means (Esc, alt+f4, the X button, clicking on the app icon and selecting Close). I also took out the flag that enabled the minimize button, and made the window non-resizable. I named it...

The Window that (REALLY) won''t DIE

I unleashed it on a girl in my friends QBasic class whom we didn''t particularly have any affection for. She started going crazy cause she couldn''t close this app. So the teacher comes over and tries closing it. It taunts her and she get''s mad and restarts the comp. Doh! you may think. Not so, for I placed the .exe in the Startup folder! BWAAAHAHAHAHA! I can only imagine her face when it started up again and said

I''m baaaaaack! Didjamissme???

They had to bring in the system administrator for the school to try and figure it out, and she couldn''t. Meanstwhile my buddy is on the floor dying with laughter.... oh man it was great. If anyone wants it lemme know and I''ll email you the source

You know? I did the same about a month ago. But this one copies itself to another directory and loads from the windows registry, not the startup folder. I was just bored... :D I thought I could bother some friends but then I realized this app might be too mean for them.
I'm still looking for someone to piss off!!

I''m this close to thinking you guys are writing viruses.

I made extra dos commands, namely ''am'', ''can'', ''could'', ''is'', ''should'', ''will'', etc, that displayed answers to yes or no questions, i.e.,

c:\>will the world end today?
It seems very likely.
c:\>damn.
Bad command or filename.

I also made a windows program that made the screen slowly fade to black. It was wierd, because new windows and anything that got redrawn could come back at full brightness. It was neat. I also wrote one that randomly swapped adjasent pixels on the screen. It looked like my display was a painting. It was also cool, but it had the same flaw as the other one.

I don''t use my awsome powers for evil, and therefore wouldn''t set them to run at startup. That''s really mean. It''s okay if the user knows that''s going to happen, and is okay with it.

Now I feel like downloading some ''desktop toys''.
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

Guess who just found his new favorite topic?

Gaiiden, that''s great... I wish I would''ve thought of it, I would''ve pulled it on one of my programming teachers. Or left it as a senior prank last spring, set a timer on it or something so it would randomly pop up sometime after graduation maybe. (Of course, that was the problem with our NT network... things didn''t like to stay where you put them.)

AndyMan... there was a virus that did something like the falling text. I think it called Cascade.

And smart_idiot... I wouldn''t call these viruses--not even trojans, because they didn''t disguise themselves as something else. Well, except for maybe the one I mentioned... I mean, the correct executable was like Hugo1.exe, and since all the batch file did was change directories and then run the executable it was called Hugo1.bat... so when he renamed it, the only clue that it wasn''t the right executable might have been the file size. And since nobody else would''ve known how to check filesizes, even if they knew how to get out of autoexec... mwahaha.

My first curses program was the ''amazing blackflip man''. It was a simple little UNIX program that would run an ASCII animation of a little guy backflipping his way across your screen. The fun part was, it worked across multiple consoles, off one edge and then onto the next.

It looked quite impressive when I hijacked all the Xterm displays in my uni''s computer lab with it. One little backflip man, flipping his way from one screen to the next, in a giant loop around the room.

I just remembered another one I wrote back when I first learned VB. This one is probably pretty common and a little juvenile.
It would display a Yes/No box asking something like "Do you have a microscopic penis?" when you would put the mouse over No it would change to Yes. Kinda lame now looking back on it but when I first learned VB I thought it was kinda cool.

I also modified the program I talked about above (hide task bar and desktop icons) so that it would do different things depending on where you started it from. If it ran from a random location it would copy itself into the startup folder and if it ran from there it would make everything invisible and spawn another copy of itself then both would make sure that the other is running and keep making sure that there is still a copy in the startup folder, if not it would replace it from another location.

For an average user it would be almost impassable to get rid of it (Unless they know how to go into and use safemode). I was going to put it on my friends computer but decided that the program was too evil to live.
