Got some basics done so far, Onto actual gameplay tomorrow...
Here is my journal entry for today:

I almost forgot to link my "pre-natal" journal entry! Let me do that now:
The Week of Awesome III: A Prenatal
(It was previously posted in the administration thread, but I was prompted to post it here as well.)
I'll hopefully later on post an entry for my first day's work; I've already begun it, but, well, the day (as I define it) isn't yet done!
@DKoding: That looks like a cool start! I do seem to see Death there, although it looks as though he's not yet "useful". ;P
@DifferentName: I rather like those characters: they're cartoony and fun. Of course, if that's not your intended art-style, then fair enough.
@Endurion: That looks like a good start.
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

My third post. (I'm really not trying to be spam-y).

Just FYI I tend to post more during the thinking phase. So I'm post a bunch today and tomorrow but the last few days will probably be only one post a day.
Here is my first entry! Good luck everyone!

First real journal entry for the competition here: http://www.gamedev.net/blog/2098/entry-2261340-woa-iii-day-1/, I did a pre competition test post too.
I had a slow start to the competition since I've been in work all day but I'll hopefully get going later in the week when I'm off. Lots of similar ideas by the looks of things, will be interesting to see every ones different takes on it.
My "day" isn't quite over, but I think that I'm ready to post my blog-entry for this first day:

@Thaumaturge thank you! He will become useful soon enough...

The theme didn't grab me at first - It's funny how all the WoA themes revolve around life & death in some way.
Most of my initial ideas were too ambitious for what I would like to attempt this year
In the end I've settled for a platformer game (a genre I enjoy!). In my game dying will still be viewed as a negative thing from the perspective of the characters involved, but "useful" from the perspective of the player. I want to keep the specifics under wraps for a bit longer -- at least while people are still formulating their ideas -- to avoid accidentally seeding competitors with ideas, it is a competition after all!
Day 1 is almost over for me and it has been a slow day for my game unfortunately. Lots of real life stuff going on instead.
So far I don't have anything graphical to show, my coding efforts have mainly been around figuring out Scala and getting the basics (game-loop, etc) up and running. I'm planning to go with a (possibly low-res) black-on-white graphical style, I employed a similar style in the first WoA competition.
@Endurion - My guess as to what your gameplay mechanic is: The bunny moves cell-by-cell around the arena and there's a safe route to the carrots. Make a wrong move and bunny will die in a cruel and unusual way. You have X lives in which to figure out the safe route.
@DKoding - That's very cool!

Day 1
Competition Journal: http://gamedevis.cool/en/category/the-week-of-awesome-iii/
Wow, the time sure flies, last night I had trouble sleeping because of the euphoria induced by the start of the competition and the announcement of the theme. Now is 1+1/2 hours past midnight and the first day is over. The theme made me daydream a little upon my favorite game Dark Souls, maybe you will see some influence in my final implementation.
I managed to make a general idea about my game concept and I also found my hero:
You can read more about Day 1 on: http://gamedevis.cool/en/the-week-of-awesome-iii/the-week-of-awesome-iii-death-is-useful-day-1/
I wish to all the competitors many power of concentration and a good time management with plenty of rest, Mens sana in corpore sano.
