Hello, I am currently creating a Metroid(NES) Clone called "The Metroid Revival" with a built in editor. I was hoping that some of you might be willing to help me on this project. An extra programmer would be nice but here is what I am really looking for: Ripper: I need someone who is able to successfully rip the tiles and sprites from the original NES Metroid game. Some music ripping would be nice as well. Webmaster: I will need a good web site but I have neither the time nor the resources for such a thing. If anyone can give me a hand in this, i''d greatly appreciate it. Programmer: Not needed, but if you want to help, reply here. i will put in in a waiting list and if I need your help you will be called (first come, first serve). The project will be freeware, distributed and hosted by Armageddon Games. So if you can assist me, please do.

The paragraph above coupled with the one below will put you in big trouble. It''s called "violation of copyright." There''s a ton of threads about it, so look around (there''s one in Game Programming right now.)

If you''re not making big bucks (let alone no money) off of it, they never come after you.

Not true; if the company can be shown to have had knowledge of the existence of your game and not done anything, they''ll lose their copyright (they didn''t "defend" their copyright/trademark.) The best thing to do is to write them and ask permission to use their characters/references in a non-profit enterprise. Most likely, they''ll say yes and you''ll be home free.

Good luck.

There are a ton of other programs that clone NES games, and from what i''ve heard no one has come after them. besides, i am rewriting the entire engine myself, not to mention the program is designed to play Metroid style games, allowing other games to be created off of it. Maybe I should ask Nintendo though if I can actually use the name (I am charging no money what-so-ever, so i think it will be all right. Besides, it''s a NES game. Why would nintendo waste precious resources to protect a 15 year old copyright on a game that is no longer produced?)

Mabye there going to use the Idea for a New 3d game coming up, you never know. Asking first wont hurt anything. Ive seen people get sued big time for what you are doing.

let me expand. I am cloning a certain engine for the game. The NES engine is different from all the other games in the series, i''ve checked. Thus, my program would be under the limitations of the engine, although I plan on expanding it a bit further.

Anyways, I e-mailed Nintendo so I am awaiting a response. I think it would be alright. I''ve played multiple Mario clones, Zelda clones, even some FF clones, and none of them have been touched by Nintendo as of yet (yes, Square used to work for Nintendo) And Joe, expect an e-mail from me very soon. I could use your help.

Who could rename your game to something more generic and use your own graphics and level (dont care if they''re crappy). Then, let someone make a mod, or do it yourself. That mod would use Metroid NES graphics and level.

Or he could just make a Metroid clone straight out...

But that would be illegal
