Well at the moment I''m planning out a 3D engine, so would love to join a group who are working on one currently (I want to do a first person shooter).
I''m a bit of a beginner, but have done courses in C++ and am learning a lot of directX right now.
I did a demo, info on that at www.angelfire.com/games4/glensoft

I was looking at the whole 3D thing but decided against it until I had a good grasp of programming games, and getting my head around how to make interesting gameplay.
If you get a project underway I would certainly be interested in getting involved in the latter stages (texturing etc.). I have done quite a bit of 3D modelling work in the past, to the point of transformations, shading etc. but never pursued it any further.
I am currently writing a kind of old-school arcade shoot-em-up game, 2D. Although I will probably implement 3D models in time - but I want to keep that nostalgic feel. All the 3D flying games seem to be first person, I like the old sideways scrollers.
If you are looking primarily at the engine side of things maybe I could help with that and then we could use the engine in some games?

Ah 2D shooters are fabulous, gotta love ''em. Freedom of movement doesn''t really exist in games like R-Type so your skill and speed are called upon all the time. Fantastic.
I''ve begun work on my 3D engine this afternoon, just a few classes. I can do stuff in code it''s just the setting up bit that I find hard.
I messed around with a 2D game but didn;t go any further, since games companies almost always dismiss 2D games I''m told, so went into 3D.
Keep me posted on how you get on, and I''ll do the same

I thought the same but the guys on this site have been really encouraging, and I think there is a good market for well written 2D games. I''m doing this first game for kicks and to see if i''ll be any good at it. But if it is received well, I might approach a games company, or just market it myself? There have quite a few successful independent games.
I''m using 2D so that I can concentrate on the gameplay but I will probably incorporate 3D in time. There''s an open question to the guys out there:
Any games that use 3D graphics in a 2D R-Type scroller?
Definitely let me know how you get on. The more I hear from other people the more I am encouraged to continue with my own stuff. My momentum drops sometimes

Hi,
R-Type Delta uses 3D gfx in the classic side-on manner. I''ve made 2 2d amateur shooters on the psx myself, plus I was working on a 3D game (similar to Delta) with a brilliant artist I found through this site (If you read this Mark, mail me!).
There could be a market out there for you, but you are going to need some very original and brilliant ideas to make your game stand out. There are still many things that you could do with a game of this type (that haven''t been done before).
Good Luck!
Marc.
