Looking for a good textbook

I am planning on ordering a class set of "The Game Maker's Apprentice". Game Maker will be the main program I have students using (I'm sorry, "engine"). I noticed that the printing date is 2006. Does anyone know why there have been no recent additions, if the 2006 version will hold up now and are there any general books that you all think would be worth purchasing as a class set other than the classic titles meant for game designers, like "Challenges for Game Designers"? I'm looking for things like workbooks as well. Any help is much appreciated!

Is there any reason why are you choosing this particular book over any online sources that are freely available?

Yes. I want lessons, not just tutorials.

A quick google search sent me to www.gamemakerstudiobook.com with much newer publication dates. As for the quality: no idea.
I hope this helps.

looks like they wrote a book

1. as a way to make some more money with gamemaker and...

2. as a way to get more folks using gamemaker.

given that they've dong nothing more in a decade, odds are their attempt was not successful.

i think the last game book i saw that was really useful as opposed to someone just trying to cash in on the gamedev scene was michael abrash's "back art of 3d game programming".

don't get me wrong, there are good books, but there are also a lot of titles that seem to be simply trying to cash in on the gamedev scene, in some way or another, to some degree.

I need a classroom textbook. I will be utilizing Game Maker. Any other suggestions? Or maybe a general textbook on some other aspect of basic game design or video games?

For Game Design, I recommend Game Design Workshop by Tracy Fullerton. If you're looking for books on
some other aspect of Game Development, you'd need to specify which aspect.

I'm looking for a book on the use of Game Maker. One that is up to date.
