Earlier today I was thinking about how :p (with a capital "p") equates to . Is it only because both have a tongue sticking out or did the implementors of the forums think the emoticon meant the same thing as the icon? I have always thought the :p was similar to :/ and the icon meant a laugh.

I think the emoticon is on target, I generally use :p in chats to signal a funny, goofy smile. You know how you do something funny yet stupid and laugh about it? For sticking out my tounge I use >:p

Actually, I've been doing Internet since it was text mostly. We used it at college on a VAX VT100 terminal with Lynx for the browser. Here's the emoticons we used then and are now standard:

: + ) = (smile)
: + D = :D (open mouthed smile)
| + D = |D (usually similar to ROFL or laughing so hard your eyes are closed)
: + P = (sticking tongue out)

Variations on these could be made by adding a '-' between the two characters for a nose or '>' for a beard. Also { is a mustache and 'd' above the eyes is a hat. Also '8' was usually wearing glasses or oogling sometimes.
SO --> my friend that wore glasses and a baseball cap and had a goatee used to represent his smilies or emoticons like this:
Smile = d8-{)>
frown = d8-{(>
Laugh - d8-{D>

there you have it, a quick lesson in emoticons.
