Harddrive problem. please help

Hello The hard drive of my computer makes a strange clanking noise and about 30 seconds later my computer completely crashes. I ve tried formatting my hardrive and reinstalling everything but it seems to still be happening. I have a Maxtor hard drive and a AMD Duron 800 processor with a VIA motherboard. Does any one know what is happeing to my computer? It worked fine for almost 6 months and then all of a sudden this seem to be happening. I''m really stuck I know very little about PC aritecture and the libary books havent helped. Any help would be great, thanks alot. PS I using the Promise Ultra IDE 100 connection, Geforce MX, 256mb, soundblaster LIVE, and win 98. I hvaent explained very well because I''m worried it is going to happen any second now. Any help would be graet I havnt checked this letter throug because I running out of time I tried to post on Andre''s board but it din''nt work s I quicly copied it over to here and probpably under the wrong topic so sorry in advance. thanks

Your hard drive may just be dying (that''s not too uncommon). Back up your data as soon as possible. Plan on getting a new one if this one suddenly stops working in the near future.

The hard drive is breaking. At my work place we had a few hard drives do the same thing.

Thanks alot. I kind of realised that things wre pretty seroius I reckon the compant sold me a dogdy hard drive from the start, the bastards. Its quite strange how it just seems to randomly happen sometimes it happens before windows even starts! I been online 10 mins now and nothing bad has happend. My old computer had no problems for about 5.5 years and my new PC breaks in 6 months just my luck. I guess hard drives are cheap now any way. Thanks.
