Building a Computer

First, is building your own computer a legitmate option over purchasing one? I want to have Win2k and Linux on my comp, but all the new ones have WinXP on them. Is building one cheaper than buying one? Second, are there any good internet resources or books on building computers?

You could probably get a prebuilt computer with no OS preinstalled and put one on it yourself.

I''m not sure. I always just buy the parts and look at the manual if I''m confused
[Resist Windows XP''s Invasive Production Activation Technology!]
To figure out how to do it you should just read your motherboard''s manuel, and the manuels of the other hardware you purchase.
To save money... find deals on good stuff. A.K.A. things that cost little with high quality. I saw a nVidia card for 69.99 in CompUSA and I plan on buying it(because my Vodoo .. I won''t even start with that.).
Good Luck to you.

Also, check out Price Watch, thats a large database of many different companies products. (I got 50ft of Cat5 cable for $10 by Linksys and my KVM Switch by using that site).

For tons of good info on this check out www.sharkyextreme.com The boards there are fantastic.
As Invader X stated....
Look at www.pricewatch.com for the best pricing.
And just so you know.... if you have installed any part of a computer before, you really should not have a problem building one.
And if you are still unsure, you should ask other people at work or school..... On average I know 1 out of 5 people that can put a system together.

i am not a hardware person, so i just buy them whole... but i have a friend who builds his own every couple of years...
he finds the best, cheapest parts at computer shows and stuff, pops it together, and has a box that is better than the high end ones you can pick up at the store.
one word of advice though: make sure you leave enough room in your case for a fan! he once forgot that, put in a fan that was too small, and could only use the computer for 30 minutes before it would overheat and crash.

If you''re comfortable buying from no-name retailers, you can save a lot of $$$$. Especially if you already have all the software you need.
Wait, wait, wait....who''s Nambla Fett?

masonium,
If you want, let me know roughly the amount of money you want to spend on a new system and I will look into putting one together for you.
Let me know things that your wish to have on the system also, such as Win 2000, 512mb.... what ever else.

Tom''s Hardware usually does an awesome job reviewing parts, and they also have a price-watch-ish feature as well. Check them out at http://www.tomshardware.com.
For the best prices, I always go to http://www.pricewatch.com. I just bought a 128MB stick of PC100 SDRAM for my father''s POS for only $8.
