I need to implement a method of dealing with extremely large numbers (I''m talking numbers with millions of digits), and I have two questions. First, are there any free math packages available that do this sort of thing? Second, where can I learn more about a faster way of doing the basic operations on numbers (+ - * / % power, etc)? The only way I know of to do this is to use the "paper and pencil" method that we all learned in elementary school, but I seriously doubt this will be fast enough for the REALLY big numbers. Russell

The GNU MP is a library that does exactly that sort of thing.

This page has a few links to books and software that discusses this sort of thing.
