Sci-fi Settings

Original Post
Seems like the two dominant settings are oldern fantasy with the elves and dwarves and sci-fi with the tech stuff.
Does anyone know which type of sci-fi setting is more preferred by gamers?
Far future such as Anarchy Online, Starwars, etc.
Near Future such as Unreal Tournament, Final Fantasy the movie, etc.
Fantasy World excluding timeline such as Final Fantasy 7, Dragon Ball Z, etc.
Which one do you prefer and which one do you think most people prefer?
Thanks in advance for any comments
Personally, I''m a fan of very far future settings, like The City and The Stars , by Clarke.
Failing that, plain old far future.

Stop trying to think outside the box. Come on! Conform! Be one of us! Be one with the elves!
One of us! One of us! One of us. . .
No not the elves! Anything but the elves! They are everywhere. (grabs knees and rocks back and forth mumbling something about evil elves out to get him...)
Thanks Mayrel,
I was just curious that when people say they like sci-fi, which one are they generally talking about?
Man, there was a post like this you''d like, but it was a few months ago. Wish I''d bookmarked it.... but you may want to search for it.
Anyways, Babylon5-style hard edge near future works best for me. I like Star Wars and Star Trek, but when it comes to sci-fi I like more science, which you tend to get in near term more than far term SF. A good example is Independence War 2, btw, where they talk about how some of the tech works. I think it just makes it more believable.

Heh, I was just reading that right now and came back to ask if it was it since he describes it all in there.
Anyway, is that the one Wavinator?

I see you''re not a fan of the sci fantasy thing?

I think they''ll like whatever you give them if the game is fun to play. I suppose some genres of gameplay work better with certain settings, such as an RPG for fantasy elements in the future, FPS for near future.

I see you''re not a fan of the sci fantasy thing?Thats probably my favorite. FF7 type of setting is alot more uplifting to me than the depressing sci-fi looking places. I guess to each his own.
Actually, I really like the depressing, "everybody''s dead but us" post apocalyptic setting. Dunno, something must be wrong with me. I like dark, depressing Russian novels, too.

I like games/movies/genres like Final Fantasy The Movie... Hrmm... But take into consideration that this movie failed at the box office... (I personally liked the movie to death, but... Well... What I like just doesn''t matter if what everyone else likes is different in this world, eh?)
