I''d like to generate random terrain, place objects on it, and have the ability to calculate surface height at any point on the terrain. Should I be looking for code using fractals, heightmaps, or something else? Thanks in advance for any info! -Todd

The most common representation of terrain is as a heightmap. Fractals can be used to generate the hightmap. Look up the diamond-square algorithm, Perlin noise, and the fault algorithm. That ought to get you started!
