Approximately how many lines of code do good engines(Quake3, Unreal,Lith, etc.) have?

I would say thousand and thousand and I would also like to say that it's not coz you have 1000000000000000 lines of code (ok...) that your game is the best...

I remember a plan file that carmack wrote when he was developing Quake 3, where he said that the graphics and network code had all ready grown to 30,000 lines... which is just graphics and network ( in development ).

Well i know some NBA basketball game for Dreamcast was approximately 500 000 lines of code but thats not an engine and a completely different genre.

You''d be surprised how easy it is to get a high line count engine. I mean, my 60% complete particle engine is over 1500 lines (though, this isn''t your average particle engine, its some pretty advanced stuff ), and my entire engine is over 10000 lines... Not too bad for a single indie developer... Though now I have a permanent programming teammate to help me take over the world w/our l337 programming skills. MWUAHAHAHA!

Check out the postmortem''s on gamasutra.com. Here''s the postmortem for Black and White (2 million lines of code with a $5.7 million budget).

I always wondered how long it would take just me to make the next Quake, so lets say there was 25 full-time developers working on B&W trudging through 80 hour weeks (I suppose this is the average) for 3 years, that''s over 300,000 man hours. It would take just me 35 years, 8 months, 2 weeks, never leaving my desk, and NO SLEEP to accomplish that feat.

My math software has about 8000 lines now and it''s only 0.3 version. I guess about 15000 lines of total amount of code, but I must agree Wolf_04 - amount of lines isn''t the quality!

My Leveleditor has about 60.000 lines... although about 12.000 aren't used anymore (old view system hehe)... I don't think a good engine takes more than 300.000 lines of code.... it's more what you write, not how much :o))
