Has anyone hacked the gMax-file-format yet? Is it pretty much the same as 3dsmax?

Load the tempest gamepack and export as MD3, then convert to whatever format you use.

You lose the animation info though.

I tried loading a gmax file back into 3dS MAX R3.1...it got halfway there...it loaded the file properties etc. but got into a bit of a mess with the geometry. Given that gMax is based on R4 (as far as I know) I imagine that the file must have used some R4 features that R3.1 couldn''t handle - therefore I believe that the GMAX files are nearly identical to the MAX files.

I think it is likely that R4 would load this file straight away as a .MAX file (I think it handles gMax anyhow) - using exactly the same code to load GMAX and MAX files. I guess that either GMAX or 3dS insert a token somewhere into the file to indicte the validity of the file - and GMAX searches for the token and (depending on how exactly it works) either loads the file or refuses to load the file if the token exists.
