Coding on the go...

This might sound silly, but anyway... I find myself having very little time to code usually. With school and work and such, the time I have to sit at the comp and work out some routine or fix some problem is very limited. Sometimes when I am sitting at the comp I draw a blank, I can''t think of a way to solve a problem, sometimes when I''m not even thinking about programming something will pop into my head. I was thinking in investing in a PDA or a palm PC or whatever they''re called. I''m one of those people who can''t write code on paper, for whatever reason, and I never seem to get anything done since working by yourself gives you very little motivation. Anyhow, might there be some syntax checker or something that aids in coding on a PDA? Is this even a reasonable idea? ------------ - outRider -

I wasn''t asking a specific question about coding software on PDAs, rather I was asking about opinions on the PDA''s viability in this respect from anyone who might have used it in that way, something I doubt I''d find by searching the net.

I use a Psion 5mx myself. Its own programming interface is very easy to learn, so you can easily program your own simple syntax checker on it

My apologies. That wasn't how the question came across.

I think it's an extremely viable option. I'm looking into revamping my workflow (and considering getting rid of my desktop entirely, but we'll see about that - maybe if they come out with a mobile GeForce3). I'm actually more interested in a tablet (flatscreen PC, no keyboard, stylus) as it would be perfect for taking notes, scribbling algorithms and doing quick tests (plus the cool factor would be off the chart :D) and I could do any more serious programming on a laptop.

I have no information on syntax checkers, though, sorry.

[Edit:] Spelling and capitalization.

I have an ipaq, with the targus fold out keyboard and i would never think of coding on it. This mainly has to do with the screen width, since I tend to use lots of indentation while programming, and 240 pixels just isn't enough space when i am used to at least 1024 pixels on my laptop and 1600 on the desktop. You can get the ipaq screen to be a little wider (320)if you switch to landscape, but then you can't use the keyboard. I tend to think that PDA's are better for storing and retrieving information than entering it, and i mainly use mine to view html, pdf files and ebooks. I think you are better off with a laptop for programming, especially since they are so cheap right now and if you hibernate with windows 2000 or XP, the boot time is about 20 seconds or less. Its easier to type, easier to read, and it will compile your code.

If you are interested in coding on a pda, then i strongly suggest you borrow one from someone you know or go into a store with demo models and try it out to see if it works for you before you buy one.
