You can use the GetDlgItem function to get HWND from control ID. You can also use the SendDlgItemMessage function to send message directly to control using parent window HWND and control ID.

just one more thing .... does anybody know where to find a clear and understandable reference about using windows controls in your program (not MFC)?
It''s all done through CreateWindow and CreateWindowEx. Or did you need something more precise and already knew that?

All information about windows user interface can be found at MSDN->Library->Windows User Interface. In my opinion MSDN Library is a mess, but there are overviews and examples for all windows API topics and reference on all API functions.
For example function GetDlgItemText is described at Windows User Interface > Dialog Boxes > Dialog Box Reference > Dialog Box Functions, some overview about it is at Windows User Interface > Dialog Boxes > About Dialog Boxes > Dialog Box Settings > Dialog Box Edit Controls, and an example is at Windows User Interface > Dialog Boxes > Using Dialog Boxes > Creating a Modal Dialog Box
