Ok, i''m using windows xp on my laptop (came with it, and i don''t really like it already) i pop in a cd, and as usual, the annoying autorun feature tries its bs, i stop that, and i want to explore the cd, to find what i want. i open up explorer (win button+E), double click on my D:\ drive (cd in my case) it does the autorun crap again, fair enuf, i right click on it, go to explore, and it brings up another explorer window, and it''s pointing at the desktop?!?! wtf? can''t click on the cd to expand it on the left pane (folder view), can''t right click on it there and expand it. This is pissing me off to be sure. I can go to the command line (dos style) and access all my files and folders there, but it''s annoying. How in the hell am i able to explore my cd in the GUI? Btw, i *have* checked microsoft.com and it''s no use, if i can''t figure this out, or it just won''t work, i''ll format the damn thing and install something that actually works, like 98se or Mandrake, but i''d rather not at this point. FYI, i have checked several cd''s at this point, 3rd party, as well as ones i have created, and it won''t let me explore either. Any suggestions that can help? Thanks in advance, to you, not to microsoft...

reformat.

Try 98se or mandrake. Supporting Microsoft on XP is a huge mistake IMO.. but then, I just can''t tell enough people this.

I''m running 98se, but am seriously considering a switch to RH Linux 7.2 with a VM like VMWare installed perhaps to run my windows applications. My current complaints about the GUI is that it still isn''t perfect.. there is a lot of work to do to make things run more smoothly. (and I''d kill to get rid of all these XFree86 problems..) Other than that, it has just about every application I need with the exception of Adobe Photoshop and Homesite. The Gimp just isn''t a good enough equivalent.. and homesite just plain rules for web authoring.

I''m not bashing 95/98/Me/2000 btw.. those are all perfectly suitable operating systems. I''m just finding 98se to be too much of a hastle to maintain..

Windows XP came with my new laptop, wasn''t my choice, i''ve been using it for 2 days now, and it is most certainly NOT a good experience, XP means experience, it does not mean that it will be a good one by any means. I''ve already paid for it, so i might as well learn to use it

Went into dos, got onto the D:\Utils directory with no prob, copied files from that directory to my desktop in the command line, again, with no problem. Right clicked on the desktop, new->shortcut, typed in d:\utils, click next, and it says it cannot be found . . . . .this is REALLY pissing me off at this point, it seems there would be NO reason for it to be this way, is this a bug or just *another* microsoft screw up?

*Growl* Called Toshiba tech support, they told me windows was screwed, and to format and reinstall. Why is it every version of windows needs to be fixed by either rebooting or formatting?

-Skibum will buy linux tommorrow.

Pardon me? You said that XP == Experience. Damn, I thought i stands for Xtra Problems! Anyway, XP sux ass and the commercials are ever more annoying than the OS itself. With that stupid songs of Madonna, yegh! Maybe I dump 2K after work and install RH Linux anyway!

I don''t want to sound pro MS, but I am finding my experience with xp to be getting better and better. Of course there are a few issues with it, but I remember everybody going thru the same thing during the switch of 3.x to win 95. XP is stable, I ran stei for a week straight and it was rock solid. and some of the features are cool, then again they are continuing to shove their little products down your throat(messenger) but over all I would say it is one of there best.

I''m finding my experience to be getting more and more of a chore if i dare continue working with this "operating system". This is my 5th day of owning a system installed with Windows XP, and I am now using my recovery disks for the 3rd time. This is not exactly the experience I was hoping for. It seems at this point, any little change i make, be it to options, installed programs, preferences, etc, will disable something totally unrelated, like the ability to browse the contents of a CD rom in the drive. If I have to type commands on a dos window in order to copy files from a CD rom to my hard drive, i would be using DOS, not XP. At this point, unless i recover from bugs in the OS, that''s what i have to do. This is not acceptable. In 5 days I have encountered 3 unrecoverable problems, until something changes, windows xp is not for me, and i would recommend against using it to anyone who asks my opinion.
