javascript website in visual composer - trying to do a read more/read less button via text html vs visual text editor

I'm working on my website in wordpress: visual composer.

I'm trying to add a read more/read less button because it's highly text-based. and the important info is at the top.

it's not working I don't want to post all my code here because you don't like that.

I was using code from w3schools html in the text box (instead of visual text editor) where you can see the code of the block. then I added custom css and custom javascript locally both. as it was advised.

some code is actually visible on the page.

and the button isn't doing anything.

it's working better I downloaded a plugin for wordpress but the button doesn't say anything, it's supposed to say “read more” and “read less”
