Hello,
I've recently came across news about Nintendo (and other firms, mainly japanese ones) who are doing a lot of patents to officially protect their games.
As far as I know, gaming was always far from patents. Most gaming companies are even sharing what they devised, during symposiums. But this time seems over now. One exception to this was some patent issues with the shadow stencil volume techniques from Carmack, but I don't really remember exactly the problems.
I must admit that I'm a bit afraid that sooner or later we won't be able to do what we want anymore. For me this is a big issue since gaming was always evolving from copying each others.
What are your thoughts ?
Are other studios patenting their games, logic, tech ? I'm thinking about non japanese ones mainly.
