Hi!

I think you should use the software your team feels most comfortable with. The most common case is to use the modeling authoring tool for animations, i.e use blender for modeling, skeleton setup, animations and then export / import in Unity. However I havent used Unitys built in animation system so I cant tell you whats best.

Perhaps you should try out both ways and find out which one suites your needs?

A modelling software like blender might have features that unity is lacking that might be useful for you, on the other hand unitys animation system is perhaps simpler and therefore easier to get started with.
