Hey, I am not an experienced programmer, however I would like to play around with the Quake II source code and compile it. My problem is, I can''t find the cpp file that contains the main() function in it so that I can compile. What file do I need to open to compile the program? It seems like every file I go into in Visual C++ 6.0, under the build menu, execute is greyed out. Thanks for your help, David Bowles

just open the project files from vc++ instead the .c files.

Select Active Configuration to "Win32 Debug" or "Win32 Release" but not "Win32 Debug Alpha" or "Win32 Release Alpha".

Has anyone gotten the following error message?

warning LNK4075: ignoring /EDITANDCONTINUE due to /INCREMENTAL:NO specification
LINK : fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file "\unzipped\quake2\quake2\debug\r_aclipa.obj"
Error executing link.exe.

r_aclipa is an assembly file, you need masm32 to build it.

After you install masm32, in MSVC goto Project/Settings select the ref_soft project, and select multiple configurations (Win32 Release + Win32 Debug). Now Open the source folder under the ref_soft project and select *.asm files (ctrl helps alot). Then hit the Custom Build tab, and you should see under ''Commands'' something like "ml /c ...", replace the ml with the path of you mam32 ml.exe file, ex: "c:\masm32\bin\ml ..."

Now for that warning, select all 5 projects, select the Win32 Debug build. Under the C/C++ tab, under debug info, select Program Database. Now pick the Win32 Release build and select no debug info.

Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

Every time I close Q2 (any version) is leaves an empty Button on the taskbar, then I have to press every empty button to remove it. It's not that big of a deal, except when you're modifing quake2.exe and have to close and open a new process every new build it, then it turns into a click fest...is this just me? I'm running Win98 SE.

KingPin,

I get these empty window buttons on the taskbar when running the retail version of Quake 2 on Win 98 SE also. I also get the same empty buttons with my own OpenGL / WIN32 code. I''m pretty sure it has something to do with creating and destroying windows with changing screen resolution. I havent got in detail enough to research this on the net or test it under multiple situations - but I know it doesnt occur when I run my program on Win XP. Just thought I''d add that someone else experiences the same thing, and like you said, its not that big of a deal, but a pretty inconvient pain in the ass. If someones familiar with a code fix for this - I''m all ears. Merry Christmas all.

Wow not on XP? I bet it only does it on Win9x/ME.

I dont think the original question was answered at all...so I''ll just do that now:

On the sidebar where you normally would see a long list of filenames that are in the current project/workspace, click on the ClassView tab on the bottom. Then expand the "Globals" list and under that are a list of all the functions with purple boxes next to them. Its organized in alphabetical order. If you double click on a function prototype it will automatically take you to the function definition(not protoype if there is one).

Do realized that it still wont make much sense to you even if you can see where the program starts and branches off. There is no simple game loop, and if you try to follow the program flow you will go off in so many endless branches that you will give up before you back out of the first function call(not Win32 API).
