Hello, I''m new to this forum but have used the site for a long time. I''m going to college next year. I got a 29 on the ACT and 1130 on the SAT. Does anyone know if Virginia Tech offers a better deal than Ohio State on programming? How good are those specialty schools like Digipen or FullSail? Computer Engineering is hardware type stuff and I know what Computer Programming is, but what is Computer Science? Does anyone know of any scholarships related to programming? Genius is knowing when you''''ve stumbled across the truth.

Well, I''d say don''t go to OSU, just because I''m a Michigan fan

Strangely enough, my sister actually goes to Ohio State, and I still hate them

Someone might correct me on this one, but as I understand it Computer Science is really both coding and the theory behind the code, looking at how algorithms work, etc. Maybe learning some abstract thinking, too, to help solve problems.

Hehehe... screw VA Tech and come to University of Richmond...they have a full scholarship (~$27k/year plus money for summer research) for math, science, and computer science majors.

Although... you''d have to wait a year. Scholarship applications were probably due the 15th of December. Ah well... everyone else, apply UR (No, I don''t work in the admissions office)

Yeah, that''s exactly what it is. Of course, you can''t get a computer programming degree from a college, because they basically don''t exist... You have to learn the theory behind it anyway to really understand what you are doing.

The actual meaning of "Computer Science" given to us by my introductory CS course instructor was along the lines of "the use of computers to solve scientific problems." When he actually broke things down for us it turned out to mean "programming the scientists' computers so they do what the scientists want."

Computer Scientists work at REALLY low levels. There is no level of abstraction for them, since they _implement_ the code that allows a level of abstraction. They write compilers, they write operating systems, etc.

Now bear in mind that even if all this is too "down-and-dirty" for what you plan to do with the degree, no one has ever been hurt by building a strong foundation.

I just got accepeted to Ohio State and Bowling Green State University. Going to BGSU, closer and smaller(80,000 students is a bit big for me). I''m still an Ohio State football fan at heart.

As to computer science schools, I don''t really give a shit. All I need is the piece of paper that tells people I''m ''qualified'' for the job. I can prolly outcode some of the graduates of these fine schools.

wondrboy: I got a 29 ACT and 1200 SAT. BGSU and Ohio State were bot happy to accept me.

I went to Virginia Tech, but I majored in Mathematics. I took a lot of Computer Science classes for my concentration, though. It''s an excellent school, though I''m biased Make no mistake, CS is a VERY difficult course of study, and I admit I stumbled in one of my classes. And be prepared to spend many an hour on your projects. My data structures projects usually took at least 30+ hours to complete. Not necessary very difficult, but a good lesson in time management. Also, up here in the Northern VA area, Tech is a well respected college to have a degree from, so there''s another good reason.

No knocks to OSU, I''m sure it''s a good enough school.

Thanks,

Another Question:

As I understand it the Computer Engineering degree is similar to the Computer Science degree but more geared towards hardware. I don''t intend to take this one cuz I don''t really care about hardware (the CS degree sounds better for making games) but does the hardware part of the equation come into play for Game Programmers or is that more for driver writers like for a video card or hard drive.
