Does it bother anyone else that in the Java EULA: That Sun Microsystems, Inc includes this notice: ….JAVA TECHNOLOGY IS NOT FAULT TOLERANT AND IS NOT DESIGNED, MANUFACTURED, OR INDENDED FOR USE OR RESALE AS ONLINE CONTROL EQUIPMENT IN HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS REQIURING FAIL-SAFE PERFORMANCE, SUCH AS IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR-TRAFFIC CONTROL, DIRECT LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES, OR WEAPONS SYSTEMS, IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF JAVA TECHNOLOGY COULD LEAD DIRECTLY TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE…. It bothers me! Why Not? Edited by - ZenGeneral on January 4, 2002 9:35:24 PM

You have to pay HUGE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to get rid of that disavowment.

It''s just legalease to cover them; if someone decided to use Java to run an MIR machine, and then due to a software fault it kills someone or gives them cancer or whatever, they can''t sue Sun for the bug.

Nearly all software has that stipulation, and if you ever release source it''d be wise stipulation to add
The trade-off between price and quality does not exist in Japan. Rather, the idea that high quality brings on cost reduction is widely accepted.-- Tajima & Matsubara

nah, for 2 reasons:
(1) it is a disclaimer. they only say that to cover their ass. it''s not as if they made an official press release saying their technology sucks and never works; they just don''t want to be liable just in case.
(2) i haven''t used (nor do i plan to use) Java for any nuclear facilities or aircraft or anything like that. worst case, it crashes and some random guy loses his game progress.

Damn, looks like I''m going to have to scrap my Java nuclear defence software. Maybe I should switch it over to Windows and Visual Basic.

It's a disclaimer because java does not support real time processes; and it cannot because that type of service is provided at the OS level. Aircraft control towers and nuclear reactor monitors require guaranteed low latency context switching and guaranteed time slicing for all processes. You can't reliably count the amount of radiation being emmited by a sample if your process does not get woken up at guaranteed intervals. If java decides to garbage collect, or it gets paged to disk, then your count is off. This is related to the reason you cannot get fine grained time in mills from a JRE.

I think Zen was trolling, but anyways...

Was this the first License you stopped to read. GLP has that disclaimer, M$, and I''m sure many other too. It''s a legal CYA boilerplate statement.

Try reading some SEC reports from ANY company.
