Has anyone been able to play Doom for linux lately? The last time I tried to play it was when I built up a slackware 3.2 box a couple years ago. It worked fine on that. Now I have a Redhat 7.1 box and can''t get Doom to play. I installed svgalib 1.4.3. I''ve built a kernel with a.out support. Anyone know if there are any incompatibilities with Doom and RH 7.1? Is the game too old? Am I just wasting my time trying to get this game running? I''d prefer to play console rather than X. I know its an older game, but darn is it still fun. Not the original but a hacked version with OpenGL support called llxdoom or something like that. It did not install right some symlinks in /usr/local/bin was missed.

Great fun but I do not like the flashing "light effects".

I played it on Slack 7.1 a while ago... Don''t have it anymore since I''ve upgraded to Slack8.

I had the same problem trying to play doom on a Redhat 6.x system - it said it couldn''t execute it for some reason - i think the original doom was compiled under a 1.x linux release and is incompatible with new versions or something. Try a different source-port, like ZDoom, it runs on my system with no troubles and looks just like the original.
