Dev-C++ sucks

Actually, I suck, and I''m blaming it on my compiler. Anyway, is there any reason why Dev-C++ shouldn''t recognize the LPDIRECTDRAW4 or DDSURFACEDESC2 datatypes, assuming that I included all proper header files and lib files? I mean, the rest of the program works fine. No other compiler errors except for those two. I have the DirectX 8 for Dev-C++ packaged installed correctly. I know that I have the right DDraw object, because I followed the procedure for obtaining a DDraw4 object perfectly, and got no compiler errors on it. In fact, I even took LaMothe''s own code for a DirectDraw demo, and I still get two compiler errors, one on this line: LPDIRECTDRAW4 lpdd4; and another on this line: DDSURFACEDESCR2 ddsd; If I remove the ''4'' and the ''2'' at the end of each data type on these two lines, it compiles perfectly, but the program doesn''t run correctly (which may be a different problem entirely). What am I doing wrong?

Dev-C++, is that Visual Studio? Not sure, but I''ll give a reply like it is
Check your include/library folders for Visual Studio. (Tools -> Options [Directories] ) Make sure that the include folder for the DX SDK is above all of the rest. Otherwise it will grabs the headers from VS which are old (which is why it should compile without the 4 and 2).

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing, it sounds like that particular .cpp file is including an older verion of the ddraw header that doesn''t fine the later structures.

I had the Dx7 & Dx8 SDKs install for a while, and I had the Dx7 inlcude path before the Dx8 ones, but I had the Dx8 library path before the Dx7 ones - oh man did my computer act funky.

No.. I am afraid it is not. BloodShed C++ has it''s own built libraries.. you have to search for them. Try their message board. The last time I checked they ''ported'' in the DirectX5 libraries.. of course.. my search was done a while ago.

I downloaded a package that supposedly made Dev-C++ ready for DX8 programming -- unless I misunderstood something. If what you said is true (about it being DX5), then things would make sense. As I understand it DDraw4 didn''t come about until DX6.

I guess I could use Visual C++, but I have the introductory version, which puts an annoying message box at the start of every app I create! Hehe.

On second thought, if DDraw4 wasn''t available, wouldn''t a get a compile error when I used lpdd->QueryInterface()? I used IID_IDIRECTDRAW4 as the GUID parameter, and that part compiled just fine.

The only compile-time errors I got were when I tried to declare pointers of types LPDIRECTDRAW4 and DDSURFACEDESC2. The funny thing is that LPDIRECTDRAW (without the ''4'') and DDSURFACEDESC (without the ''2'') worked fine.
