Is it possible to end the annoying matrix posts? I am normally very tolerant of annoying people, but these ones are pissing me off. Thanks a ton. Oh well, if not I have another solution to the problem. Come back tomorrow and see if they''ve gone away. (-:

Good thing I couldn''t stay away from the forums. Thanks a ton! I can''t stand people who do that. Then they forget they you log IP addresses.

Actually, I think the Lounge needs a major overhaul. Things have gotten rather out of hand here; there''s almost no more courtesy (for example, some people go out of their way to attack religious beliefs they do not hold) and it''s virtually impossible to hold a reasonable conversation.

Once, long ago, I posted a thread GameDev Slipping? which stimulated some ideas from the staff, mods and members on the part we all have to play in making this site as good as it is. I think it''s time for another such review.

I still think we need a cliff and anyone who''s going out of line should be sent there for jumping practice

I think the Lounge should stay pretty much the same, with maybe a more active moderator. The reason is that it keeps the rest of GameDev sane.

If the only forum people come to is the lounge, this place would not look like a serious game development community. But looking at the other forums, this place serves a great purpose, and I feel it is only getting better.

The lounge is basically the place to put any non serious stuff. Perhaps if there was a "Food for Thought" forum for the more serious minded topics, but it would require very close supervision.

I agree completely. Kevin and I were just discussing the fact that we need to tighten up on the Lounge a bit. Things have been gradually slipping over the past several months.

Not that I think that all discussion here needs to be serious; far from it - some people are quite good at providing a little comic relief. What I''d like to put an end to are things like:

  • People using the smallest excuse to flame someone (and that''s not just in the Lounge - I was discouraged by many of the replies in the DX v OGL thread that you closed today).
  • People posting with the intent to offend other people.
  • All the "vs." and "what''s your favorite" threads. Sure, a handful have been interesting, but most have either been unimaginative, or done several times before.

As was said in the thread you listed, and as Graylien just posted here, much of the responsibility lies with the community. The staff and moderators can step in to close and delete threads, and even ban people if we need to, but we really shouldn''t have to be involved that much to make things better.

One final thought: if dwarfsoft really is gone, then I think I know just the person to replace him (no, not Oluseyi, he''s already a moderator ).

Hmm, maybe two people can moderate the lounge?

plus, moderators now have permisions to moderate any forum. This is why there is only one goatse-related thread on the front page.

I think there''s a general consensus that while the Lounge is necessary and a welcome relief from the intensity of the more technical GameDev discussions, it still has to stay within bounds. I think one of the most important steps to doing this will be education - talking to others who crap post/flame/misbehave inappropriately (cos, let''s face it, there are times when crap posting is okay), perhaps in private via email, to convince them that their methods are detrimental to the community at large.

This now applies to the entire forum, as is indicated by threads like the one Rhino referred to (the D3D v OGL flamewar I closed). I think there have been excellent suggestions in this and other threads, and as I''ve said before "If there''s anything you need me to do, just let me know."

Agreed. Crap posting has gone way up in recent times. Of course, this isn''t the first time it''s happened. I remember way back when the forum topic didn''t say "I.E., don''t post JUST to post."

To be honest, I think the best way to deal with it is, if people won''t control themselves, for the moderators and staff to start laying down the law with people who flame, etc. Perhaps there could be a link to a terms of service at the top of the forums page, which says that flaming, etc. will not be tolerated, that way people can be forewarned like that. Just a thought.

I think that would be a bit like letting a fox into the hen house if you know what I mean....

I couldn''t agree more about the slipping of the lounge. I am glad to hear that something is going to be done about it. If my parents walked into my room and saw some of the threads on the active topics list, they would probably have a fit.

Just an out of line question: Your parents are gonna kill you if they see you''re reading a topic about the matrix?

I have another small, simple suggestion. Instead of just closing threads, a small post from the moderator in it with a little warning would be nice. People should be able to get the point anyway, but others will need it spelled out for them.
